New Cirrus Logic Music Processor Enables the Sub-$50 Portable CD-Based MP3/WMA Player

7/30/2002 - Consumer electronics manufacturers can now create portable audio players that retail at sub-$50 consumer price points and offer almost a full day of compressed digital music per CD with the launch today of Cirrus Logic’s (Nasdaq: CRUS) new CS7410 music processor.

The CS7410 is a scalable, high-performance, single-chip digital audio processing solution that supports CD-DA, MP3, Windows Media Audio (WMA) and future compression standards. WMA offers more than 22 hours of superior music quality storage on a single CD.

Designed to add compressed music playback capability to mainstream audio products, the CS7410 is a hardware/software solution optimized for CD-based audio systems, including portable CD players, boom boxes, and bookshelf audio mini systems.

The launch extends Cirrus’ lead in the personal compressed music player market and further establishes the company as an early innovator in the CD-based MP3/WMA player space – a rapidly growing digital entertainment category that is building marketplace momentum by creating convenient and inexpensive new ways for consumers to store, carry and enjoy many hours of their favorite digital music.

Research firm IDC forecasts that U.S. shipments of CD-based compressed music players will surpass those of every other portable compressed music player category in 2002, and will grow from over 1 million units in 2001 to surpass 18 million units in 2006, representing a compound annual growth rate of 77 percent.

"The addition of compressed audio playback functionality to proven form factors will be a key growth catalyst for a new generation of portable CD players," said IDC Research Analyst Susan Kevorkian. "The lower retail prices made possible by advances in music processor technology are essential, in terms of taking compressed audio players mainstream in the years ahead."

“The CS7410 makes it inexpensive and simple for manufacturers to add MP3/WMA capability to portable CD players, boom boxes and mini systems,” said Terry Leeder, vice president, worldwide sales and marketing, Cirrus Logic. “For Cirrus, this presents a huge market opportunity to provide state-of-the-art digital music features for the 60 million-plus portable CD player market. And for the consumer electronics industry, this launch takes compressed music mainstream by enabling convenient, cost-efficient new ways for consumers to enjoy their music away from a PC.”

“Cirrus Logic’s long-time support for Windows Media continues with innovative IC solutions that offer breakthroughs in cost as well as in benefits,” said Jonathan Usher, director, Windows Digital Media Division, Microsoft Corp. “Cirrus Logic’s WMA support on the CS7410 allows manufacturers to create personal audio devices that offer a groundbreaking combination of superior audio quality, cost efficiency, and better customer value.”

In addition to its availability as a flexible, design-in IC, the CS7410 also serves as the centerpiece of portable audio reference designs that pair state-of-the-art front-end servo technology with the CS7410’s unprecedented processing capabilities and features.

The CS7410 offers manufacturers a rich feature set, a flexible architecture that supports CD-DA, MP3 and WMA compression formats, and low overall system costs due to its highly integrated design. The CS7410 includes a 32-bit RISC core, a 16-bit audio DSP, an 18-bit delta sigma DAC, 256K of ROM, and 80K of RAM all on one 100-pin LQFP or MQFP chip.

Pricing and Availability
Available immediately from Cirrus Logic, the CS7410 in MQFP is priced at $8.62 in quantities of 10,000. The part is also available in LQFP packages.
