Cirrus Logic Processor Selected to Power APEX Digital Portable DVD Players

7/25/2002 - Cirrus Logic, Inc. (Nasdaq: CRUS) today announced that its CS98000 DVD processor has been selected to power a popular line of portable DVD players from APEX Digital, Inc., the leading supplier of DVD players in North America. This is the latest in a series of DVD-related design wins for Cirrus Logic and strengthens the company’s relationship with one of the world’s leading suppliers of DVD players.

Selected by APEX to power its next-generation portable DVD designs, Cirrus has helped to create a new category of portable DVD players at an attractive consumer pricepoint. Cirrus-powered products include the APEX PD-50 and the PD-100 portable DVD players currently on the market and priced between $199 and $289. With this new category of portable entertainment devices, Cirrus continues to serve its customers with its Total-E-TM solution strategy, providing cost-effective, high-quality DVD chipsets for some of the most popular DVD brands in the world.

Portable DVD players are a new product category, further extending the growth of the booming DVD market. The sales for portable DVD players are expected to rise in the coming years, providing a major growth market for manufacturers. Jay Srivatsa, principal analyst for iSuppli Market Intelligence Services, estimates lower prices will continue to drive high growth in the market and forecasts that sales for portable DVD players will rise from 3.2 million units in 2002 to 5.8 million units by 2006.

Apex continues to be a leading player in the overall DVD market with North America market share estimated at 17% of unit sales according to a report from NPD Tec world’s Senior Analyst, Tom Edwards, making Apex the leading provider in the North American market.

“This design win escalates Cirrus Logic’s rapidly growing position in the DVD market and allows us to fully leverage our leadership position in audio and video technology by providing our customers a compelling battery operated solution at affordable prices,” said Terry Leeder, vice president of sales and marketing for the Cirrus Logic.

“We have selected Cirrus primarily because of their cooperation with us, in expediting technology in a chip that ‘fits’ our particular needs,” said Ancle Hsu, chief operating officer for APEX Digital, Inc. “Cirrus is helping Apex to bring leading edge entertainment to all styles of life - whenever and wherever people want to watch their DVDs. Our joint technology allows consumers to enjoy the new generation of digital entertainment at price points every consumer can afford.”
