BittWare Introduces Integrated DSP System on Single COTS Board

7/23/2002 - BittWare, Inc. announced today the Tiburon, a complete DSP system providing a host PC and peripherals, general-purpose DSPs, and real-time I/O, all on a single 7"x7" board. A cost-effective, small, and convenient solution, the Tiburon provides system designers with all of the pieces necessary for implementing a complete DSP system solution.

Embedded Host PC Subsystem
The Tiburon is outfitted with a host PC and a variety of standard host peripherals. The host PC is a 266 MHz Geode SC2200 from National Semiconductor. Peripherals for the Geode include Ethernet, VGA and TFT video interfaces, dual USB ports, dual RS-232 ports, and an IDE connector for external drives. Memory available to the host PC includes 128 MB of SDRAM, a socketed BIOS flash, and an on-board CompactFlash/MicroDrive.

Floating Point DSP Subsystem
Providing the real-time signal processing for the Tiburon are four 100 MHz ADSP-21161 SHARC® DSPs from Analog Devices, providing a total of 2,400 MFLOPS of processing power. The four DSPs are clustered to a 50 MHz processor bus, which also connects a 64 MB bank of SDRAM, 8 MB of flash memory, and 512 KW of SBSRAM. BittWare's SharcFIN ASIC provides the 32-bit, 33 MHz PCI interface to connect the Geode host PC to the DSPs; it also provides a variety of bus interfaces and peripherals for the ADSP-21161s.

Real-Time I/O Subsystem
A diverse range of real-time I/O interfaces makes the Tiburon adaptable for many applications. One channel of high-speed, 14-bit A/D (65 MHz) and D/A (100 MHz) and four channels of general-purpose, 12-bit, 50 kHz A/D and D/A are available to interface analog signals to the DSPs. A Spartan-II FPGA (Xilinx) provides reconfigurable, high-performance I/O control and processing to interface the external signals to the DSPs via its SHARC link port core or the 32-bit processor bus. It also provides 32 bits of digital I/O.

To further extend its real-time I/O capabilities, the Tiburon features an industry-standard PMC interface with BittWare's PMC+ extensions. It is fully compatible with standard PMC modules or with BittWare's PMC+ modules.

Available Software Development Tools
BittWare offers a complete set of software development tools for the Tiburon. A broad choice of OS, real-time OS (RTOS), and driver support is available for the Geode processor, providing a stable, comprehensive development environment. Analog Devices VisualDSP++ development tools can run directly on the host under Windows, and BittWare's drivers and development tools directly support various versions of Windows or Linux. These tools provide the developer with a completely integrated development that supports all tasks from code editing and debugging to deployment and control. To help developers get a head start on their projects, BittWare also offers a developer's kit that includes a 1 GB MicroDrive with the software preinstalled.
