7/22/2002 - Sybase, Inc. (NYSE: SY), a leading enterprise infrastructure and integration company, today announced that its technology has been selected by China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (Sinopec Corp.) - China's leading producer and supplier of oil and petrochemical products - to power a new point-of-sale application at more than 30,000 gas stations across China. The company will rely on Sybase® technology to enable electronic payment processing and automate the collection of sales data for improved operations and customer service.
To support its multiple companies and divisions, Sinopec required a solution that integrates easily with a variety of back-end systems and hardware platforms. This multi-million dollar contract includes purchase of Sybase's industry-leading Adaptive Server® Enterprise (ASE) 12.5 as the source database and PowerBuilder® for application development. The SQL Anywhere® Studio small footprint database from Sybase subsidiary iAnywhere Solutions will power the point-of-sale terminals at service stations and its UltraLite deployment technology will be embedded in the gas pumps. In addition, its MobiLink technology will be used to synchronize data with headquarters.
"As China's leading oil product producer and supplier, we are pleased to partner with Sybase on this innovative point-of-sale application," said Chen Tonghai, vice chairman of the board of directors of Sinopec Corp. and vice president of Sinopec Group. "We selected Sybase over a number of other vendors because of its proven products and technology as well as high quality of professional services."
"Sybase has enjoyed great success in China early this year with the contract wins of People's Bank of China's National Advanced Payment System and China Telecom's domestic telephone network management system upgrade across twelve provinces," said Danny Fung, managing director of Sybase Software (China). "Today's announcement with Sinopec builds on our momentum in China and demonstrates the strength of our enterprise infrastructure in powering applications that enable anywhere anytime, anywhere access to information."
