Agilent Technologies announces leading-edge WLAN RF Test Capabilities for the Agilent 93000 SOC Series

7/18/2002 - Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) today announced new enhancements to the RF Measurement Suite for the Agilent 93000 SOC Series that enable customers to test radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs) for wireless local area network (WLAN) standards. Leading-edge error vector magnitude (EVM) measurements and 6 GHz orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) stimulus capabilities enable the Agilent 93000 to cost-effectively test a broad range of WLAN RFICs.

According to In-Stat/MDR, production volume of next-generation WLAN devices is expected to rise sharply in the coming years. Production volume for 802.11a devices is expected to increase from 805,000 in 2002 to 16,331,000 by 2006. Volume production of 802.11g devices is projected to increase from 6,700,000 in 2003 to 23,700,000 in 2006 (1).

The new EVM test capability performs critical transmitter and receiver tests on WLAN ICs. By performing EVM measurements, the device is tested under conditions similar to its final use environment, providing ultra-accurate performance verification. In most cases, a single EVM measurement can replace other RF tests, thereby reducing test time. Additionally, the RF Measurement Suite's new 40 MHz IF bandwidth RF receiver allows the system to perform adjacent channel power ratio (ACPR) and complex modulated power measurements in a single acquisition, further reducing test times and driving down the cost of test. 802.11a ICs require at least 5.8 GHz modulated stimulus, as they operate within frequency ranges from 5 to 5.8 GHz. The Agilent 93000 with RF Measurement Suite supports true 6 GHz OFDM modulated stimulus capability. This eliminates the need for upconverters on the DUT board, simplifying design and reducing debugging time. By enabling cleaner DUT board designs, the true 6 GHz stimulus of the 93000 improves the accuracy and repeatability of crucial RF measurements.
