7/16/2002 - SST (Silicon Storage Technology, Inc., NASDAQ: SSTI), ), a leader in flash memory technology, today announced a new stand-alone, high-performance ATA Flash Disk Controller that boasts a sustained write speed of up to 4 MBytes/sec., thereby allowing for faster and more user-friendly mass data storage products. SST's high-performance ATA Flash Disk Controller is the critical building block that enables OEM customers to provide highly reliable and flexible mass data storage products such as ATA-Disk Chips (ADC), ATA-Disk Modules (ADM), CompactFlash cards and other flash memory-based, fixed-disk replacement storage solutions. For consumer electronic devices, such as set-top boxes, MP3 players, digital cameras and thin-client systems, flash memory-based mass data storage continues to be a superior alternative to traditional hard disk drives because of its ruggedness, small form factor and lower power consumption.
SST also disclosed today that it will provide its new high-performance ATA Flash Disk Controller to Apacer Technology Inc., a longtime strategic partner and customer. SST achieved the high performance of its ATA Flash Disk Controller by developing a unique multitasking technology. The multitasking technology allows SST's controller to perform multiple tasks simultaneously, such as erase, program and read functions, thereby significantly improving the overall performance of the end-user device. For example, picture file sizes in today's high-end digital cameras can be 3 MBytes or higher per picture. With large file sizes, the amount of time it takes to store the image in the flash media becomes very important. With the fast 4 MBytes/sec. sustained write speed of SST's ATA Flash Disk Controller, the amount of time digital camera users have to wait between taking pictures will be greatly reduced, leading to a more enjoyable user experience. SST was able to increase the performance of its ATA Flash Disk Controller without incurring higher overall power consumption, making it ideal for flash-based mass data storage solutions in portable electronic devices.
In addition to industry leading write performance, SST's ATA Flash Disk Controller also offers fast sustained read speeds of up to 5 MBytes/sec. This superior performance benefits end-use applications, such as thin-client systems, set-top boxes and Internet appliances, which require the loading of large operating system images in the shortest time possible.
SST's high-performance ATA Flash Disk Controller is easy to embed onto a system's main board and integrate with external flash media chips, because during initial power-up, SST's multitasking technology instantly recognizes the external flash media and performs all the necessary "handshaking" routines for media support. SST's controller further aids the manufacturing process by eliminating the complexities and overhead associated with writing specialized firmware to support functions such as bad-block management, error correction and flash media wear leveling, which are required in order to achieve reliable data storage operation.

For security protection of data stored on the external flash media, SST's new ATA Flash Disk Controller includes a Write Protect (WP#) Pin, which prevents any unintentional data overwrites, such as those commonly caused by system viruses. SST's ATA Flash Disk Controller also comes factory preprogrammed with a 20-Byte unique serial identification number allowing encryption of user data to prevent unauthorized duplication.
