7/16/2002 - Performance Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: PTIX) today announced that Northrop Grumman Information Technology, a leading information systems integrator, is using Performance Technologies' PCI344 WAN communications adapter and HDLC WAN software within the National Weather Service's Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS).
The National Weather Service provides weather, hydrologic and climatological forecasts and warnings for the United States. AWIPS is an integrated suite of automated data processing equipment that supports complex analysis, interactive processing, display of hydro-meteorological data, and rapid and reliable dissemination of warnings and forecasts.
"In the early 1990s the AWIPS program provided needed replacement hardware for an antiquated legacy system. The increasing demands for expanded data sets and processing that can handle time sensitive, highly critical information made it necessary to continue upgrading the system," said Donna Rhine, AWIPS program manager, Northrop Grumman Information Technology. "Performance Technologies' PCI344 and WAN HDLC software was part of the solution needed to make this migration and keep AWIPS on the cutting edge."
"As we continue to offer IP communications products, our software content and high reliability is the number one reason customers across several industries choose our products," said Ed Bizari, director of marketing for Performance Technologies. "Working with Northrop Grumman - a leading provider of information technology to the federal government - underscores the quality and value of our products."
The PCI344 WAN Communications Adapter provides four high performance synchronous/serial channels for data communication. The HDLC WAN software package supports the satellite broadcast and receipt of critical weather data between a central National Weather Service data collection site and geographically distributed field sites.
