7/11/2002 - NMS Communications (NASDAQ: NMSS), the leading supplier of technology for tomorrow's networks, has partnered with Colibria, an Oslo, Norway-based company committed to providing world-leading mobile Internet solutions, to offer European mobile operators a range of revenue-generating voice-controlled applications such as mobile instant messaging (MIM) and location-based services via NMS HearSay™. NMS HearSay is the industry's first complete and open, multi-application system that enables wireless and wireline carriers worldwide to quickly and cost-effectively deliver the voice-empowered enhanced services of their subscribers' choice all from one platform.
Colibria's applications integrated within NMS HearSay provide a clear service differentiator to European wireless operators by creating an all-in-one system for messaging services that will enhance subscriber satisfaction and loyalty, as well as drive up airtime and increase average revenue per user. NMS HearSay with Colibria applications is now available for trial. In addition, the two companies are offering operators a demonstration of Colibria Instant Messaging, a multi-channel MIM application with a voice-controlled user interface, and Colibria Friends Finder, a multi-channel location-based services application integrated with NMS HearSay. The demonstration is located at Colibria's headquarters in Oslo, Norway. Interested operators may contact Colibria to get a user account and a phone number to dial into the service.
NMS HearSay is a completely open, ready-to-deploy system that enables operators to rapidly and cost-effectively offer their subscribers custom multimodal voice and data communications services such as short message service, location-based services, and unified communications. By integrating applications from leaders such as Colibria, NMS HearSay spares service providers the significant burden of identifying and then ensuring that these hardware and software products are ready for deployment in "live" network environments. And unlike most platforms that offer only a single application, NMS HearSay supports multiple applications from multiple vendors. As a result, operators can innovate, providing the latest revenue-generating voice and data services, faster and at a lower cost.
NMS HearSay is based on an open architecture that merges telecom mobility with the content-rich Internet and allows for an easy evolution from circuit-switched to packet-based Internet Protocol (IP) networks and smoothes the transition from 2G to next-generation 2.5G and 3G networks. Every NMS HearSay system incorporates:
"Europe's mobile operators will be excited to have a single, open, all-in-one system like NMS HearSay to quickly deploy Colibria voice-controlled applications and gain the subscriber revenues that come from offering popular enhanced services," said Torleif Nesheim, CEO of Colibria.
"The momentum surrounding NMS HearSay continues, and the value of the system is strengthened even further by our partnership with Colibria, a true voice-empowered services innovator," said Brian Demers, vice president and general manager of NMS' Network Solutions business. "The integration of Colibria's voice-led applications and HearSay greatly strengthens our position in the European mobile sector and better serves operators' needs for offerings with high appeal in their geographical markets."
Messaging services such as those provided by Colibria represent phenomenal growth in Europe. Industry research firm Yankee Group forecasts that the European wireless messaging market will reach $35 billion in 2006.
Colibria Communications Applications
Offered within NMS HearSay today are:
Colibria Mobile Instant Messaging, which enables users to easily communicate with friends on and between any devices, allowing them to send and retrieve messages via voice commands wherever their friends are using a PC, SMS, or WAP interface, and to leverage ICQ, MSN, and Yahoo! instant messaging services. Colibria MIM allows users to send group messages from SMS and voice, and displays a list of friends and their status. The Colibria Instant Messaging Solution is preferable to simple SMS text because it does not require all parties to use the same device, combines the attributes of instant messaging (such as group messaging) with the freedom of mobility, and provides more information.
Colibria Friend Finder, a location-based service that allows users to easily obtain information about where a friend or group of friends are located - using voice, SMS, PC/Web or WAP interfaces. By using simple voice command/questions such as "Where is Lars?", users can get a vocal or textual description of where a friend is, information about how far away they are, view a map of where they are (via map support from Pocket-IT), and call that person/persons by saying their name without leaving the Friend Finder call. Users can also become invisible while using Friend Finder and use instant messaging in conjunction with this location-based service.
The companies plan to continue to expand the set of Colibria applications available with NMS HearSay, focusing next on integrating Colibria Chat for private and open chat rooms and group voice boxes, and Colibria Communities for group management -- or community and club communication and administration -- such as creating groups, inviting friends, and adding applications by voice.
