PMC-Sierra Ships Second Generation CMOS Physical Layer Devices for Gigabit Ethernet Transceivers and Multi-Gigabit Serial Backplanes

7/10/2002 - PMC-Sierra (Nasdaq: PMCS - News) today unveiled the 8-channel PM8352 OctalPHY® 1G and the 4-channel PM8354 QuadPHY® 1G serializer/deserializer (SERDES) devices for high-speed serial backplanes and Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) transceivers. The OctalPHY 1G and QuadPHY 1G have been optimized to exceed IEEE 802.3 Gigabit Ethernet signal integrity standards, deliver market-leading power efficiencies, and increase design flexibility. PMC-Sierra's new physical layer devices integrate external passive components thereby enhancing the overall system performance and signal integrity, as well as reducing board space and system cost. These devices are deployed today in Enterprise switches, WAN routers, and Wireless base stations.

SERDES Devices Ideal for Enterprise and WAN Systems
The OctalPHY 1G and QuadPHY 1G are ideal for systems requiring large numbers of point-to-point redundant links. The devices provide up to eight independent 1.0 to 1.25 Gbps channels. The OctalPHY 1G can be configured as a single logical trunked channel providing 8 Gbps duplex data rate, while the QuadPHY 1G can be configured to provide 4 Gbps duplex data rate. Integrated capabilities include Gigabit Ethernet Physical Coding Sublayer (PCS), Physical Medium Attachment (PMA), GMII (Gigabit Media Independent Interface), and TBI (Ten-Bit Interface).

PMC-Sierra Provides High-Speed Serial Backplane Solutions
"PMC-Sierra's multi-port CMOS SERDES devices have achieved significant traction in the communications equipment market for high-speed serial backplane applications such as Enterprise switches and routers," says Peter Wong, strategic marketing manager of PMC-Sierra's Enterprise and Storage Division. "With our second generation products, PMC-Sierra is extending our product line of high-speed serial backplane solutions. The new OctalPHY 1G and QuadPHY 1G SERDES devices build upon the market success of the previous OctalPHY and QuadPHY product family to provide scalable, cost-effective solutions with the best signal integrity and lowest power available."

Second Generation SERDES Provide Pin-Compatible Upgrades
Redesigned to maximize performance, minimize power consumption and meet industrial temperature range, the new devices are pin-compatible upgrades to the company's PM8351 OctalPHY and PM8353 QuadPHY physical layer devices, enabling a smooth transition path for the large base of existing designs.

Pricing, Availability and Customer Support
The PM8352 OctalPHY 1G and PM8354 QuadPHY 1G devices are now sampling. The OctalPHY 1G device is priced at $46 in 1KU and the QuadPHY 1G at $29 in 1KU. The OctalPHY 1G and the QuadPHY 1G devices are packaged in a small 19 x 19 mm2 footprint, thermally enhanced 289-pin CABGA, and rated for industrial temperature range operation (-40 to +85(Degree) C). The devices are fabricated using proven 0.18 micron CMOS technology for ultra-low power operation. The OctalPHY 1G typical power is 185 milliwatt per port and the QuadPHY 1G is 275 milliwatt per port. A comprehensive support package including datasheets, application notes, transition guide, hardware reference designs, and device models are currently available.
