7/10/2002 - Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM - News), the leading provider of integrated circuits enabling broadband communications, today announced that the IEEE Communications Society has recognized four Broadcom engineers in its 50th Anniversary Journal Collection of the best papers in communications over the last five decades. Broadcom engineers Abhijit Choudhury, Justin Chuang, Nambi Seshadri and Gottfried Ungerboeck published four of the selected 57 foundational research papers during various points in their careers. The papers included in this collection were influential in the development of data, voice, and video network infrastructures.
"We are proud and honored to have our engineers recognized by the IEEE as leaders and innovators of communications technology," said Dr. Henry Samueli, Broadcom's Co-Founder and Chief Technical Officer. "Our significant representation in the IEEE Journal collection is further testament to the high caliber of engineers we have brought together at Broadcom, a gathering of some of the best minds in the communications industry."
Of the approximately 3,000 Broadcom employees worldwide, more than 2,000 are engineers and approximately 275 hold Ph.D.s. These engineers develop and produce state of the art technology and products that address every major broadband communications market.
"The IEEE Communications Society greatly appreciates the contributions Broadcom's engineers have made over the past decade," said Roberto de Marca, IEEE Communications Society President, 2000-2001. "We look forward to Broadcom's continued support in cultivating world-wide communications systems research and development resulting in innovative and groundbreaking technologies and products."
Founded in 1952, the IEEE Communications Society promotes the advancement of science, technology and applications in communications and related disciplines. It fosters presentation and exchange of information among its members and the technical community in over 122 different countries.
Choudhury's paper, with co-authors Ellen Hahne and Nicholas Maxemchuk, entitled "DQDB Networks with and without Bandwidth Balancing," proposed technology used for bandwidth allocation in Distributed Queue Dual Bus (DQDB) networks for broadband ISDN applications.
Chuang's paper, entitled "The Effects of Time Delay Spread on Portable Radio Communications Channels with Digital Modulation," addressed fundamental wireless transmission issues and presented advancements in wireless system design used in today's PCS networks and in the Japanese Personal Handyphone System (PHS), Personal Digital Cellular (PDC) and European Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) standards.
Seshadri's paper, with co-authors Ayman F. Naguib, Vahid Tarokh and A. Robert Calderbank, entitled "A Space-Time Coding Modem for High-Data-Rate Wireless Communications," presented the theory and practice of a new advanced modem technology suitable for high-data-rate wireless communications. This technology has been incorporated into future cellular system standards.
Ungerboeck's paper, entitled "Adaptive Maximum-Likelihood Receiver for Carrier-Modulated Data-Transmission Systems," examined noisy and distorted signal transmissions, providing a fundamental approach for transmitting more data across networks. One of the biggest applications of this early development is found in today's GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) digital mobile telephone system that is ubiquitously used in Europe and in many other parts of the world.
