Cirronet's WaveBolt Delivers High Speed Wireless Internet Access at 5.8 GHz

7/1/2002 - Cirronet, Inc., a leading provider of wireless transceivers and broadband Internet access products, announced today an addition to its popular WaveBolt wireless Internet access system. The newest WaveBolt components operate in the unlicensed 5.8 GHz band and complement existing 2.4 GHz WaveBolt products. Wireless ISPs can deploy both systems for maximum subscriber capacity in a given area; they can also deploy 5.8 GHz systems alone in areas where the 2.4 GHz band is saturated, as in emerging markets for which wireless is the predominant transmission medium.

“Extending WaveBolt's benefits from 2.4 GHz operation to the 5.8 GHz band broadens the reach of wireless ISPs,” says Robert Gemmell, chairman and CEO of Cirronet. “The breadth of the WaveBolt product range enables wireless ISPs to easily extend highly flexible, carrier-class access networks to the greatest number of potential subscribers.”

Especially effective in remote settings and over challenging terrain, WaveBolt provides Internet access technology to areas underserved by other Internet access methods, both dial-up and wired broadband. The high performance WaveBolt system serves as a point-to-multipoint fixed wireless solution, and comprises one or more ISP-installed access points (APs) and multiple user-installed high speed subscriber units (SUs). Each AP supports up to 960 subscribers, typically within a three to five mile range.

ISPs who have already deployed a 2.4 GHz WaveBolt system will find the 5.8 GHz WaveBolt ideal for adding capacity, and as an out-of-band backhaul complement. For example, a 2.4 GHz WaveBolt AP can channel its traffic to a 5.8 GHz WaveBolt for eventual connection to a high-speed landline, leaving the lower frequency band reserved for SU-oriented traffic.

The 5.8 GHz WaveBolt system features Cirronet's patented frequency hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) technology, honed over more than a decade of successful deployments in industrial and commercial settings. By applying its proven technology to fixed wireless broadband Internet access, Cirronet delivers in WaveBolt an unmatched combination of affordability, ease of installation, and performance.

General 5.8 GHz WaveBolt system availability is planned for the third quarter of 2002.
