6/28/2002 - IONA®, the leading e-Business Platform provider for Web Services Integration (NASDAQ: IONA), today announced that Winterthur Insurance, a subsidiary of Credit Suisse Group and one of the leading European insurance companies, has signed an enterprise development and runtime license agreement for use of IONA's Orbix E2A Web Services Integration and Application Server Platforms.

Winterthur Insurance began using IONA's CORBA® technology for application development and integration in 1998, and has standardized on IONA's J2EE and mainframe technologies over the last four years to build and integrate new Web-based applications with legacy business systems. As Winterthur's business demands have increased, so too has the organizations' need to build and integrate applications more quickly with a greater dependence on enterprise QoS such as transactional integrity and security. To meet this demand, Winterthur has chosen IONA's Orbix E2A Web Services Integration and Application Server Platforms as the core technology anchoring its enterprise software architecture (e-Platform). Winterthur's e-Platform will support all of the insurance company's current and future application development and integration projects. The Winterthur e-Platform currently supports 20 enterprise applications in the countries of Switzerland, Germany, Belgium and Spain.

"Many organizations have suffered unnecessary expense and difficulties due to a reactionary approach to application integration," said Martin Butler, president and CEO of the Butler Group. "The approach Winterthur Insurance and Life & Pension has taken however in building their software architecture is proactive and strategic. By building a service-oriented application infrastructure, first using IONA's CORBA technologies and now Web Services with Orbix E2A, Winterthur is future-proofing their software infrastructure by committing to standards."

"With our choice of IONA in 1998, we were able to build a service-oriented application infrastructure that has allowed us to grow our software portfolio without concern for interoperability," said Daniel Lisetto, Vice President at Winterthur. "In the design of our new e-Platform, we considered more traditional and proprietary approaches to enterprise application integration, but were unwilling to forfeit the flexibility and high-performance that comes with the implementation of standards-based technology such as IONA's Orbix E2A Web Services Integration and Application Server Platforms."

"The days of addressing software integration as an add-on feature to an enterprise architecture are quickly coming to an end -- too much money and time has been wasted," said Barry Morris, CEO at IONA. "Winterthur's success is an example of the benefits that accompany a standards-based, service-oriented approach to software integration. As IONA has for more than 10 years, Winterthur recognizes integration as strategic to success, and once again they have chosen IONA and Orbix E2A as vital to that success."
