Compuware Offers SoftICE System Debugger Tool

6/27/2002 - Compuware Corporation (Nasdaq: CPWR) announced the availability of SoftICE 4.2.6 as a standalone product. Customers who have bought or are currently purchasing Compuware DevPartner Studio Enterprise Edition (version 6.8 or 6.6.1), DevPartner Studio (version 6.7 or 6.6) or DevPartner for Visual C++ (version 6.6) now have the option of purchasing the SoftICE system debugger tool as an add-on standalone product. This offers application developers who use DevPartner Studio products a more powerful system debugger that can thoroughly diagnose and pinpoint complex system-level problems better than standard Integrated Development Environment debuggers.

Previously, the SoftICE system debugger tool could only be acquired by purchasing Compuware SoftICE Driver Suite or DriverStudio, which include driver development tools that are not required for application development. By offering SoftICE standalone, Compuware is helping application developers uncover and debug code problems easier and more rapidly.

“SoftICE is not only used to diagnose problems in device drivers, but also to identify problems in applications as well,” said Shari Zedeck, Director of Product Management for Compuware’s DevPartner family of products. “Now application developers who use DevPartner Studio can use this powerful system-wide debugger to quickly find code problems.”

SoftICE 4.2.6 is designed to work in conjunction with the error detection and debugging capabilities found in the Compuware DevPartner family of developer productivity tools. Unlike traditional debugging tools, SoftICE provides the system-wide control and visibility developers need to fix tough software system-level problems. SoftICE helps application developers debug heavily multi-threaded applications, large multi-process applications and NT services, detect extremely severe bugs such as Ring 0 errors, as well as reverse engineer complex code. Since SoftICE doesn’t utilize system resources, it can debug through the most difficult problems, including blue screens.

SoftICE 4.2.6 supports Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows ME, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 95/98. The product also supports both application and device driver debugging on either a single or dual machine configurations as well as remotely with a TCP/IP connection.

SoftICE 4.2.6 is currently shipping and is also available for driver development as part of the Compuware SoftICE Driver Suite 2.6 and DriverStudio 2.6.
