Fujitsu Takes Evolutionary Step In Mobile Computing

6/25/2002 - Fujitsu PC Corporation (FPC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Fujitsu Limited (TSE:6702), unveiled an advanced prototype of its Tablet PC at TECHXNY/PC Expo in New York and announced it is on schedule to be one of the first companies to bring this evolutionary technology to the global marketplace.

Designed as a productivity tool to meet the needs of mobile and corporate workers, the Fujitsu Stylistic® ST4000 Tablet PC runs Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition operating system and features superior processing power in the thinnest and lightest form factor to date. The unit weighs a mere three pounds, measures less than one inch thick and is equipped with the latest ultra low voltage Mobile Intel® Pentium® III processor - M. The result will satisfy stringent enterprise demands by offering maximum mobility with uncompromising performance, reliability and battery life.

"With this Tablet PC prototype we are offering a first look into what the future holds for mobile computing," said Sara Nelson, vice president of marketing for Fujitsu PC Corporation. "As we get closer to the launch of the Stylistic ST4000 Tablet PC, there is growing excitement about the Tablet PC's enormous potential for mobile workers. Our design promises to offer substantial benefits throughout their workday."

The Stylistic ST4000 Tablet PC is a full-function computer capable of running any Windows-based application. Its innovative form factor allows professionals to use their Tablet PC in places where traditional desktops and notebooks are not practical. Users can easily complete common business tasks such as check email, access electronic files, take handwritten notes, annotate documents, wirelessly share information, read electronic publications or quickly and accurately enter data virtually anywhere-greatly improving their efficiency and productivity.

Whether users are at their desk, on their feet or in a conference room, they will appreciate the Stylistic ST4000's versatile design. Mobile workers will have their choice of carrying the Fujitsu Tablet PC like a notepad or accompanied by a keyboard just like a notebook computer. It can also be transformed into a complete desktop computer using the Tablet Dock, an innovative docking system designed with ease-of-use in mind. The Tablet Dock will feature multiple ports for users to connect a keyboard, mouse and other peripherals, as well as a modular bay to accommodate an optical device, such as a DVD/CD-RW combination drive. A quick release mechanism, combined with the unit's tight integration with the operating system, allows for surprise removal of the unit from its dock, giving users the ability to take their Tablet PC with them at a moment's notice.

Fujitsu remains an active and influential participant in the Microsoft Tablet PC Initiative. Working closely with industry leaders such as Microsoft and Intel, Fujitsu is on schedule to ship the Stylistic ST4000 Tablet PC in the fourth quarter of 2002.

"Fujitsu and Microsoft have worked together to blend the simplicity of pen and paper with the functionality of a personal computer," said Alexandra Loeb, vice president of the Tablet PC division at Microsoft. "The prototype of the Fujitsu Stylistic ST4000 is an intriguing design, which will help increase worker productivity by providing users a more natural form of computing. We are pleased to be working with Fujitsu to bring the Tablet PC to market later this year."

"Intel is excited Fujitsu chose the industry's most advanced mobile processor for Tablet PCs. The two companies are committed to delivering the best mobile experience by achieving uncompromised performance and longer battery life in a Tablet PC design," said Don MacDonald, director of mobile platform marketing at Intel. "Intel and Fujitsu have enjoyed a longstanding relationship integrating leading-edge technologies into new and innovative mobile form factors while delivering the stability and scalability that corporate users expect from Intel-based platforms. We are looking forward to continuing our relationship as we embark on a very exciting era of mobile computing."

Fujitsu will offer the Stylistic ST4000 Tablet PC in North America and other regions while Fujitsu-Siemens will market the tablet in Europe (EMEA).
