(Nasdaq: VIRL), a global technology and market leader in embedded memory, and Atsana Semiconductor Corp., a leader in the development of power-efficient, programmable processors for multimedia wireless devices, today announced that Virage Logic's SRAM-based self-test and repair (STAR) Memory SystemTM is to be integrated into Atsana's power-efficient, programmable processors for multimedia wireless devices. The STAR Memory System's self-test and repair capabilities provide significantly higher yield than standard CMOS memory, and enables Atsana to develop high-performance processors that are significantly less expensive than current methodologies.
Targeting the multimedia semiconductor market for wireless communications, Atsana's array processor technology combined with the STAR Memory System meets the demands for longer battery life without sacrificing performance. These multimedia processors enable next-generation wireless smart phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and other handheld devices to deliver complex multimedia applications, such as multimedia messaging, interactive video communications, video streaming, still images, and other rich-media content.

The STAR Memory System Architecture
In order to make embedded memories intelligent, Virage Logic designed a system that includes three IP blocks that work together. The system embodies not only redundancy, which can replace defective bits, but a dedicated memory test and repair processor called the STAR Processor that automatically accesses each memory instance on an system-on-a-chip (SoC). Through patented self-repair and redundancy allocation algorithms, the STAR Processor quickly tests and repairs the memories. The repair data or signature is stored in the STAR fuse box or special registers in the memories and can be accessed either at wafer sort or at system power-on. The Atsana Array Processor Technology
Atsana's cost-effective, massively-parallel array processor delivers five to 15 times the processing capability compared to alternative multimedia solutions, while consuming one-third the power. Atsana's array processor implements thousands of proprietary one-bit SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) processors combined with RAM to create a massively-parallel architecture that tightly couples processing and memory. These processors perform operations in parallel, enabling high performance while operating at a much lower system clock frequency.
