Marvell Prestera™-DX Switch Family Drives the Transition to Gigabit Ethernet in Small, Medium Businesses

6/17/2002 - Marvell® (NASDAQ: MRVL), a technology leader in the development of extreme broadband communications solutions, today introduced the Prestera™-DX high-density Gigabit Ethernet switch processor family for small and medium business desktop switches, further accelerating the market transition from Fast Ethernet to Gigabit Ethernet. Addressing this market's need for unmanaged and economical solutions, the Prestera-DX Gigabit Ethernet switch processors provide an easy-to-use networking architecture that enables system vendors to design very affordable, plug-and-play, high-density Gigabit Ethernet unmanaged and fully-managed switches. While still incorporating many of the quality and performance features of the "enterprise" Prestera-EX and "metropolitan" Prestera-MX processors, the Prestera-DX family focuses on the requirements of the desktop environment. Advanced desktop features, such as those required for voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), include support for Layer 3 IP prioritization, four queues for voice/video/data/management and sub 0.01 ms latency. Because these solutions are typically unmanaged or lightly managed switches, the Prestera-DX family rapidly reduces development time by providing standard default configurations without the need for a CPU; where management is desired, this can be accomplished using a Serial ROM or ultra-low cost CPU.
