Media Excel and Equator Technologies Introduce MPEG-2 Software Decoder for Home Entertainment Devices

12/23/2002 - Equator Technologies Inc., a leading provider of high-performance, programmable and power-efficient system-on-a-chip (Soc) processors for video streaming and image processing applications, and Media Excel, Inc., a provider of sophisticated software compression technologies, announced the availability of Media Excel’s SoftStream Software Development Kits for MPEG-2 decoding technology on Equator’s flagship BSP-15 SoC processors.

Media Excel’s software allows manufacturers of video-centric consumer electronic appliances based on Equator’s processors to support MPEG-2 content playback. Together, Media Excel and Equator provide manufacturers of DVD players, VOD systems, personal video recorders and other video-centric consumer electronic appliances with a playback mechanism for today’s content.

Media Excel offers an MPEG-2 software decoder that supports real-time decoding of standard definition (D1) content MPEG-2 MP@ML, as well as 422P@ML. This decoding only consumes 100MHz of the BSP-15’s processing power, leaving plenty of processing power left over for additional post-processing, supporting more channels, or higher display resolution. MPEG transport and program stream demultiplexing and 5.1 channel AC-3 software decoding technologies are also available.

“We are excited about the potential our software on Equator’s processor brings to consumer electronics device manufacturers that want to support multi-function or multi-format needs”, said Jongil Kim, president and CEO of Media Excel. “Our software decoder is based upon our market-tested algorithms and fully C-source code base.”

The software development kit is available now. An evaluation package is available at that works with Equator’s StingRayTM hardware reference board and Equator’s v5.5 iMMediaTools® software development toolkit.

“Media Excel’s software on our platform makes it possible for customers to deploy real solutions for the 2003 consumer market,” said John O’Donnell, co-founder and CTO of Equator. “This software provides another basic building block of the programmable solution for savvy consumer electronics device manufacturers that want to play existing content with market tested solutions, while retaining flexibility for supporting other media formats.”

About Media Excel, Inc.:
Media Excel offers SoftStreamTM, a real-time software solution for encoding, decoding, streaming and transcoding of MPEG-2 (MP@ML, 422 Profile), H.263, and MPEG-4 (SP, ASP@L5) standards. SoftStreamTM software development kits (SDK) are compatible with ITU-T, ISO and ISMA open standard formats and cover audio, video and system standards while providing quality of video encoding that is equivalent to a hardware encoder. Media Excel’s SDKs are available for Windows, Mac-OS and Linux, and have been optimized for contemporary programmable processors (x86 - Pentium, and media processors) and ARC/MIPS architecture for System-On-Chip applications. Media Excel’s real-time scalable and embeddable software, combining both a patent-pending fast video compression algorithm and advanced computer architecture with programming technologies, offers a unique embeddable solution to the standard-based digital video applications such as video content authoring, management, delivery (streaming), and consumption (set-top box). Founded in 2000, Media Excel is a privately held company headquartered in Austin, Texas with a satellite office in Seoul, Korea. Additional information is available at
