Cable Modems Using Broadcom’s TurboQAM BCM3348 Integrated Chip Achieve DOCSIS 2.0 Certification from CableLabs

12/20/2002 - Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), the leading provider of integrated circuits enabling broadband communications, announced that 11 customers’ products received DOCSISTM certification in the 24th wave of certification testing recently conducted by CableLabs®.

Three customers receiving DOCSIS 2.0 certification use the Broadcom® TurboQAMTM BCM3348 in their cable modem products. Eight BCM3348-based cable modem products were also awarded DOCSIS 1.0 and 1.1 certification. The number of cable modem products certified by CableLabs based on the TurboQAM BCM3348 now totals ten.

“We are extremely pleased with the outcome of the most recent certification wave, especially the DOCSIS 2.0 results. The certification success of BCM3348-based cable modems in this DOCSIS 2.0 certification wave validates the strength of Broadcom’s continued technology leadership,” said Tim Lindenfelser, Vice President and General Manager of Broadcom’s Broadband Communications Business Unit. “We are pleased that our customers, who represent 6 of the top 7 cable modem manufacturers and over 70% of the total volume shipped worldwide in the second quarter of 2002, are enjoying the successful certification results. We look forward to the rapid shift to DOCSIS 2.0 modems in 2003.”

The TurboQAM BCM3348 is a single-chip cable modem that supports the two advanced communication technologies required by the DOCSIS 2.0 specification – advanced time division multiple access (A-TDMA) and synchronous code division multiple access (S-CDMA). The DOCSIS 2.0 specification enables the tripling of upstream data capacity, from the consumer to the cable operator, creating a cable network that operates at up to 40 Megabits per second (Mbps) downstream and 30 Mbps upstream. This tripling of upstream speed enables cable modem service providers to expand their broadband service offerings to both businesses and consumers to include higher speed and symmetric data service tiers, multi-line cable telephony, videoconferencing, streaming IP video, and remote learning applications.
