12/18/2002 - Atmel® Corporation (Nasdaq: ATML) announced that its Colorado Springs Operation has earned ISO 14001 registration to the international standard for environmental management systems (EMS). Registration to ISO 14001 means Atmel's EMS has been evaluated to the ISO standard and found to be fully operational in the areas of manufacturing, documentation, training, communication, emergency preparedness, preventative and corrective actions, and internal auditing. Underwriters Laboratories (UL) issued the registration.
This award is a significant step in Atmel's worldwide environmental and quality excellence program. The ISO 14001 standard, like its quality counterpart ISO 9001/QS 9000, is based on the concepts of self-evaluation and continuous improvement. Atmel is committed to conducting business in an environmentally sound manner.
The process of obtaining this certification included identifying and managing specific environmental risks and implementing pollution prevention and reduction programs. As part of the certification, specific water and energy reduction objectives were created and implemented. In addition, Atmel's existing chemical reduction plan was enhanced prior to certification. Recycling programs were active prior to beginning the ISO certification but were improved through the process.
The Colorado Springs site is Atmel's largest wafer production facility and presently employs approximately 2000 people. The site includes a clean room fabrication operation, memory test facilities, marketing operations, and multiple design centers.
Founded in 1984, Atmel Corporation is headquartered in San Jose, California with manufacturing facilities in North America and Europe.
