12/17/2002 - IONA®, the leading e-Business Platform provider for Web Services Integration (NASDAQ: IONA), and Altova, the leading provider of XML development tools, announced a strategic partnership that will include the bundling of Altova's XMLSPY 5 with IONA's Orbix E2ATM XMLBusTM.

IONA's Orbix E2ATM XMLBus provides a software infrastructure platform for the development, deployment, integration and management of secure Web services to support the integration of business applications within the enterprise. Altova's XMLSPY 5 supports the visual design, editing and validation of XML documents, WSDL, XML schema and XSLT stylesheets, which are core XML infrastructure technologies required to enable Web services.

Using these products together, a software developer can quickly and easily create and deploy Web services using either legacy code written in CORBATM, EJBTM or Java through the use of WSDL auto-generation utilities, or develop a new Web service application using visual tools for building WSDL and XML Schema. This flexibility in development creates previously unavailable opportunities for organizations to realize return on resource and technology investment, as well as improved extensibility of new XML-based applications.

"Our customers are actively building Web services applications using XMLSPY's award winning WSDL editing and SOAP debugging facilities," said Alexander Falk, president and CEO of Altova, Inc. "Our new partnership and product bundling with IONA is an essential step in enabling the XMLSPY developer community of over 700,000 registered users to build and deploy next generation Web services for application integration in production environments."

"Many of IONA's customers, and IONA's own internal engineering team, use and value Altova's XMLSPY 5," said Joseph Schwartz, vice president of product management at IONA. "XMLSPY's WSDL and XML Schema editor abstract away the complexities of underlying XML syntax and provide a sensible, top-down approach to architecting Web services applications. Furthermore, XMLSPY's SOAP debugging capabilities augments IONA developer productivity by providing an advanced Web service testing and debugging console for Orbix E2A XMLBus."

"The Altova and IONA product bundle provides XML developers a complete and economical solution for developing and implementing Web services from scratch or using legacy applications - a level of flexibility that is invaluable for today's developers," said Bob Sandie, vice president of global alliances at IONA. "We are thrilled to be working with Altova and offering this suite of Web services development and integration tools through Altova's Online Shop, one of the premier developer focused e-commerce websites on the Internet."
