New Packet Switched Backplane For Computer Telephony Helps Achieve High Availability

12/16/2002 - Bustronic Corporation, an industry leading designer and manufacturer of high performance backplanes, has announced a new PICMG 2.16 compliant backplane with dual fabric slots that helps achieve High Availability (HA). The eight-slot Compact Packet Switching backplane (cPSB) has several design features.

The Bustronic 108PS2108 features 2 fabric slots, with the rest of the slots as node slots with the CompactPCI bus and the H.110 bus for Computer Telephony. Two fabric slots provide redundancy and helps achieve High Availability (99.999% uptime). The redundant nature of the multiple fabric links across the backplane reduce points-of-failure, another step in developing an HA system. The modular backplane's 6/32 power studs allow Bustronic's power interface boards to be hooked up to the backplane that offer dual-redundant power supply swapping.

Taking Computer Telephony to higher levels, the backplane has six node slots where the CompactPCIbus can be used as the control plane, while the high-speed traffic goes across the PSB data plane. The backplane also reserves a plane for telephony per the PICMG H.110 Computer Telephony specification 2.5 R1.0 The PICMG 2.16-compliant cPSBs offer one slot that is convertible to a system slot via a CPU Enable resistor. With the power studs and power blades dispersed throughout key locations in the backplane, the overall width is a true 8-slot size. (Many CompactPCI backplanes have power bugs on the side of the backplane, adding a slot size of width to the dimensions.) This allows the 8-slot backplane to fit within a 4U horizontal chassis. Bustronic also offers various other styles and configurations of PICMG 2.16-compliant backplanes.
