Agilent Technologies opens new operation in Beijing to Serve China's communications industry

12/12/2002 - Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) announced the opening of a new operation in Beijing designed to create strong local R&D resources, product development and capabilities to serve China's growing wireline and wireless communications industry. China Communications Operation (CCO), will design, develop and market products for the communications industry driven by the unique needs of China and Asia-Pacific customers.

"The opening of this center enables Agilent to reach a very important milestone in China," said Wayne Chan, Agilent's vice president and general manager of Greater China. "By strengthening our presence in China, we can more effectively respond to our local customers' needs and help China's rapidly growing telecommunications market to develop."

"Agilent is totally committed to accelerating the development and progress of China's communications industry," said Earl Thompson, general manager of Agilent's CCO. "By locating our R&D and marketing resources closer to our China customers, we will be able to partner with them and offer them tailor-made solutions."

CCO's core capabilities will be in the area of advanced software development in telecommunications design, test and monitoring systems. Initially, there will be two core technology and product areas in CCO:

Approximately 70 percent of all wireless phones manufactured worldwide are tested during production on Agilent equipment.

The establishment of CCO follows a series of moves this year to strengthen Agilent's leadership position in China, the world's fastest growing wireless and wireline communications market. In January 2002, Agilent announced a multi-million investment package directed at establishing local solutions and services, delivery resources, and capabilities in China. This was followed by the rollout of the industry's first TD-SCDMA test solutions in April and the opening of the Shanghai Instrument Service Center in July.

Two years ago the company opened a branch of Agilent Laboratories in Beijing, focused on advanced research. Agilent Labs China shares the same site as CCO.

"We will continue to expand our communications operation to build a best-in-class organization, drawing on the extremely high level of local talent," said Thompson. "Currently we are employing 120 people and we aim to attract additional top people to increase staff strength to 170 in the coming year."
