PRIMECLUSTER from Fujitsu Siemens Computers now available on Linux

12/11/2002 - Clustering and high availability are key technologies in enterprise-wide data processing. The continuing advance of Linux into data centers makes powerful cluster solutions absolutely essential for this operating system. To this end, Fujitsu Siemens Computers is now offering its PRIMECLUSTER cluster solution – which has repeatedly proved itself on Solaris/SPARC-based PRIMEPOWER servers – on its PRIMERGY servers certified for Linux. The new PRIMECLUSTER 4 version is waiting in the starting blocks for use especially with SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 7 and Red Hat Linux Advanced Server 2.1.

The PRIMECLUSTER product suite offers a variety of services, such as sophisticated cluster failover management, support for parallel databases, and dynamic load balancing. It also includes cluster-wide data management enabling scalable access to shared data from several nodes – an important feature for companies that distribute their products via the internet. This opens the door for customers to the cost-effective world of standard Intel hardware architectures with Linux, especially in the field of high-availability applications and scalable web frontends.

Tailor-made for internet, e-business and mobile computing
Used together with the PRIMERGY rack and blade servers, PRIMECLUSTER is the ideal platform for IT scenarios such as internet, e-business and mobile computing, where a reliable, easy-to-administer and scalable frontend infrastructure is a key success factor. E-commerce and Old Economy companies need powerful solutions that can be implemented quickly and straightforwardly. Only then are they free to focus unreservedly on their core business. Integrating and administering a web infrastructure can be a very resource-intensive task that can only be mastered with the aid of professional solutions. For example, in the e-commerce sector in particular, where the competition is only a mouseclick away, long response times can more or less be equated with the failure of the web server. Rapid response times in this context are an integral part of availability and thus play a crucial role in determining business success.

Advantages of blade technology in connection with clustering
The PRIMERGY Blade servers BX300 in particular offer tremendous performance while taking up little space – up to 300 servers and 600 processors can be accommodated in a single rack, thus saving both space and energy. Integrated components guarantee lower infrastructure and maintenance costs. On the basis of a variety of sophisticated distribution algorithms, the dynamic load balancing supported by PRIMECLUSTER offers ideal response times for TCP/IP-based network accesses. By the same token, outstanding availability is also ensured, since at any given time only fully functioning servers with fully functioning network services are supplied with requests. Whenever a configuration like this threatens to reach its performance limits, its capacity can be simply and smoothly expanded by including additional nodes. This ensures a fast and calculable return on investment. For all application scenarios whose medium-term load profile cannot be reliably predicted, this offers excellent application opportunities, since the configuration can be flexibly and cost-effectively brought into line with rapidly changing business or workload requirements - all without interrupting ongoing operation.

Cross-platform deployment
PRIMECLUSTER can also be used across platform boundaries. This makes it possible to optimize the use of Solaris- or Linux-based servers in multi-tier architectures, since only one cluster has to be operated. Using different platforms has obvious benefits in terms of reducing the total cost of ownership and maximizing the availability of heterogeneous infrastructures.

Scalable web servers as a fully integrated solution
In the context of its strategic orientation to mobility and Business Critical Computing, the offering from Fujitsu Siemens Computers comprises not only a powerful product portfolio, but also the provision of fully integrated and pretested overall solutions. The customer benefits from being able to put the solution into productive use more quickly while simultaneously eliminating risks in the implementation phase. The solutions on offer also include scalable web server farms based on Linux and PRIMECLUSTER.
