Cygnal and CMX Introduce Embedded Ethernet Reference Design

12/5/2002 - CMX Systems, well-known designer of real-time operating systems and TCP/IP software, and Cygnal Integrated Products, leading manufacturer of advanced mixed-signal microcontrollers, announced the availability of an Embedded Ethernet Reference Design featuring the CMX-MicroNetTM TCP/IP stack and the Cygnal C8051F124DK Development Kit. The Reference Design includes a complete demonstration version of the CMX-MicroNet software. CMX-MicroNet is a small TCP/IP software stack that has been developed to provide Internet working connectivity tools to designers working with 8-bit processors.

Cygnal’s popular C8051F12X series of microcontrollers brings an unprecedented level of performance and integration to the 8-bit microcontroller market by combining a high throughput 50MIPS processor, a large 128K byte Flash memory, 8K bytes of RAM, and precision 12-bit analog in a single chip. With the addition of TCP/IP support, these devices provide an excellent web server platform for a wide range of industrial and commercial applications.

Chuck Behrmann, President and CEO of CMX, said, "We are very pleased that Cygnal has selected CMX-MicroNet as a networking tool for the C8051F12X family. Cygnal and CMX can now offer their customers an unmatched combination of price and performance, and this powerful combination of hardware and software will be able to work ‘out of the box’ for embedded systems developers."

"The performance of the C8051F124 has made it extremely popular for embedded web server applications," said Jim Divine, Cygnal’s Director of Business Development. "The combination of the CMX-MicroNet stack and the C8051F124 will enable systems designers to deploy robust network-enabled products very rapidly."

Cygnal’s Ethernet Reference Design consists of a C8051F124DK development kit ($149), the AB2 Ethernet Prototyping Board ($50), and supporting documentation and software. The Reference Design demonstrates how to configure an embedded web server using a C8051F124 device and the CMX-MicroNet TCP/IP software. Complete documentation, schematics, and software are available for download at Cygnal’s web site at

CMX-MicroNet is a scaled down TCP/IP software stack with a total memory footprint of 3Kb - 20Kb, depending upon configuration, for 8-bit processors or those 16-bit processors that require a single-chip solution with no external memory. CMX-MicroNet supports more 8-bit and 16-bit microprocessors than any other existing solution. CMX-MicroNet is currently available, starting at $5,500 for the base system. All CMX software includes complete source code, no royalties on shipped products, and free technical support/updates.
