12/5/2002 - Broadcom, the leading provider of integrated circuits enabling broadband communications, and Cedar Point Communications, Inc., a leader in packet-based voice switching development for the cable industry, announced that the two companies have combined their technologies to enable the world’s highest density, integrated Class 5 packet switch for cable telephony applications. This advanced switch, the SAFARI C3TM, is the only integrated carrier-class VoIP solution designed exclusively to accelerate voice deployments for the cable industry.
Cedar Point’s SAFARI C3 Media Switch combines the Broadcom® BCM1510 CalistoTM Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) digital signal processor (DSP) and BroadVoiceTM 16 voice compression codec with Cedar Point’s advanced packet Class 5 switching technology. The incorporation of Broadcom’s high-port density BCM1510 enables the SAFARI C3 switch to support more than 100,000 telephone lines on a single shelf. BroadVoice 16 enables cable operators using voice compression to service up to more than two times the number of active telephone customers on the same DOCSIS-based equipment infrastructure.
The two companies will demonstrate the advanced cable voice technology of the SAFARI C3 at the BroadbandPlus/Western Show in Anaheim, California this week, December 4-6, in Broadcom’s booth # 3739.
Based on CableLabs® PacketCableTM specifications, SAFARI C3 provides superior performance and reliability, which can significantly reduce capital expenditures and system integration and operation costs for cable operators offering telephony services, while increasing network integrity, security and privacy. In addition, SAFARI C3 includes a unique reverse gateway functionality to handle both VoIP and circuit switched calls simultaneously on the same next-generation packet switch fabric.
Broadcom’s BroadVoice 16 technology is a 16 Kilobit per second (Kbps), high toll-quality voice compression optimized for size, delay, voice quality and bandwidth efficiency in access plants. BroadVoice 16 improves the overall efficiency of VoIP by utilizing only one fourth of the bandwidth of standard G.711 64 Kbps solutions, while still providing toll-quality voice equal to or better than that provided under the ITU G.728 and G.729e standards. More importantly, BroadVoice16 only requires one third of the DSP processing power of existing toll-quality ITU G.728 and G.729e voice codecs, resulting in a significant improvement in the number of active lines the SAFARI can service using voice compression.
“Maximizing the use of cable system resources in the delivery of voice services has been a key component of our philosophy in the development of SAFARI,” said Mark Galvin, Founder and Chairman of Cedar Point Communications. “We’re delighted to be able to work with Broadcom to demonstrate how the combination of our technologies offer cable operators the greatest possible efficiency.”
“Calisto, BroadVoice 16, and SAFARI were all designed to increase efficiency and improve the cost structure for cable system operators,” said Dr. Henry Samueli, Co-Founder and Chief Technical Officer of Broadcom. “Our ability to work with Cedar Point, a leader in integrated PacketCable-based VoIP solutions, has enabled us to combine our respective technical strengths into the world’s best end-to-end VoIP solution for cable operators offering IP telephony services.”
SAFARI C3 includes all of the discrete VoIP network elements in a single chassis, utilizing a unique set of PacketClass technologies to bring the high quality and reliability of today’s Class 5 voice switches to a packet environment. Its reverse gateway functionality supports circuit-to-circuit, packet-to-packet, circuit-to-packet and packet-to-circuit traffic, providing the cable industry with the first elegant migration strategy for the more than five million cable telephony subscribers worldwide served today by legacy circuit switches.
