12/4/2002 - M1, leading mobile operator in Singapore has selected Sun Microsystems and Mobilitec to deliver a complete, scalable and robust solution enabling M1 to rapidly deploy new wireless content and services to further enhance M1's innovative lead in industry.
With the launch of M1's wireless Java services, M1's customers can use any Java-enabled mobile phone to perform over-the-air downloading of rich Java-based contents and applications. In addition, M1's customers, both prepaid and post paid can opt for a variety of payment schemes.
"With Java, we bring to our customers a new suite of services of a new dimension. These services are highly interactive, colorful, graphic-rich and have sound playback," said Mr. Steven Chan, M1's Director of Internet Services and Product Development. "Users can expect a totally new experience with Java Services. Many phones that will be commercially available in the future will be Java-enabled with colour display. This will eventually enable our customers to experience a whole new world of wireless services.
Sun's award-winning Solaris[tm] Operating Environment on Sun Fire servers met M1's stringent requirement for a highly reliable and secure system that can manage the expected traffic volume for these services, and to scale vertically as well as horizontally.
Sun Professional Services has been selected as the system integrator to design and implement M1's wireless infrastructure. With the development time of three months, Sun Professional Services has helped M1 to deploy a platform for end-to-end wireless Java service delivery.
"Sun's Java technology not only allows M1 to dynamically provision new services and applications to her mobile subscribers, but enables content providers to deliver a richer experience to the consumer," said Anton Lee, Country Director for Singapore, Sun Professional Services, Sun Microsystems Pte Ltd. "We're pleased that M1 has chosen Sun to provide the foundation for her new wireless Internet platform in delivering next-generation wireless data services."
Mobilitec's mPower offers M1 an integrated solution to efficiently manage all aspects of Java service deployment including content management, service customization, dynamic creation of billing models and subscription capabilities. mPower enables subscribers to self deploy services as they want thus increasing revenues and reducing the cost of deployment. Personalized menus, payment variety and even the ability of a subscriber to forward an application to a friend, are all powerful marketing tools for increasing market share.
"Being the market leader in deploying and launching commercial content services, Mobilitec is the ideal counterpart for M1," said Margaret Norton, CMO of Mobilitec. "mPower's advanced rule engine allows featuring unique subscription segmentation by offering combined content packages and variety of payment methods. M1 will be able to smoothly launch a service and fine-tune it accordingly to the market responses and expectations."
mPower has been the preferred choice by leading carriers around the world. Hong Kong CSL has been first in the world to launch a live downloaded service based on mPower. M1 licensing mPower, reinforces Mobilitec's leadership in the Asia Pacific market as in the rest of the world.
Started as a programming language, Java has rapidly expanded to enable breakthrough usage for the corporate enterprise infrastructure and applications, wireless devices, mobile phones, playstations, etc.
Today, Java is the platform of choice for developers as it enables end-to-end development of new wireless services across multiple device OS. Transition of e-services based on Java to m-service will be seamless. The excitement and phenomenal adoption of Java centers on its ability to work on anything that has a digital heartbeat - computer chip.
