12/4/2002 - IONA®, the leading e-Business Platform provider of Web Services Integration, announced that Con Edison Communications (CEC) has selected IONA's Orbix E2ATM Application Server Platform to support streamlined application management and integration across its business and network systems.
CEC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Consolidated Edison, Inc. (NYSE: ED), builds and operates its own fiber optic network providing managed data transport services and custom network solutions to multiple classes of customers, including local and long-distance carriers, Fortune 1000 corporations, and Internet, cable, wireless and video companies. CEC will utilize IONA's Orbix E2A Application Server Platform to control and manage data exchange between applications - including TeMIP, OMS, Peoplesoft, and Clairfy systems, as well as its internally developed network inventory and portal applications - that combine to support CEC's comprehensive range of transport products and services.
"Orbix E2A Application Server Platform is the glue that connects our disparate set of business and network applications," said Larry Linken, senior vice president of IT at Con Edison Communications. "It's standards-based design and mature features such as CORBA/XML standard-sets eliminate concern for interoperability, allowing us to build a best-of-breed system that delivers our customers the highest quality products and services. We researched a wide variety of application infrastructure products, but IONA's Orbix E2A Application Server Platform was unmatched in terms of quality, and the degree of ROI and improved efficiency it will help us to create from our existing IT infrastructure."
"Con Edison Communications' application inventory is an example of the IT incompatibility that challenges many companies," said Barry Morris, CEO of IONA. "In no industry is this more apparent than telecommunications, where the demand for data and information to be delivered faster, at a higher-quality, and via new hardware devices increases each day. Orbix E2A Application Server Platform helps companies like Con Edison connect their disparate applications and systems using standards, so that the data and functionality they have spent years gathering and developing can be used to support new business initiatives, build better products, and improve customer and partner communications."
