Douglas J. Bartek, Chairman & CEO, Microtune Named a Finalist in 2002 National Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in the Emerging Category

12/2/2002 - From his boyhood days working in his father's television repair shop, Douglas J. Bartek developed an interest in electronics. Today, that longtime interest has developed into Microtune®, a company that designs, manufactures and markets tuners, amplifiers, transceivers and short-range wireless radio and baseband processors for the global broadband communications, automotive electronics, and wireless connectivity markets. Creating what experts refer to as the most revolutionary advance in tuner technology in the last 50 years, Bartek was named one of three finalists in the 2002 National Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year® Emerging category. R. Greg Blair, president of Escort, a manufacturer of radar detectors based in West Chester, Ohio was named the award winner in the category.

Bartek, along with other national Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year finalists and category winners, was selected by an independent panel of judges from among 434 award recipients, all of whom were acknowledged at an awards gala - the world's largest gathering of entrepreneurs - on Saturday, Nov. 23, in Palm Springs, Calif. National and regional award recipients were culled from a pool of more than 4,400 nominees from throughout the nation. Bartek was named an award recipient in the Southwest Area region (N. TX/AR/OK) at an awards dinner held at the Dallas International Apparel Mart in June of this year.

"Douglas Bartek is an inspiring example of the perseverance that defines true entrepreneurship," said Gregory K. Ericksen, Global Director of Entrepreneur Of The Year for Ernst & Young. "Ernst & Young is proud to honor an emerging entrepreneur who shows such great promise."

Re-Inventing the Tuner
As an adult, armed with bachelor and masters degrees in electrical engineering and a M.B.A., Bartek left a secure management position and took an 80% pay cut to follow his dream - developing an integrated radio frequency circuit that was small and powerful enough to handle the audio, video and data performance requirements of new classes of broadband applications. So promising was his vision that within six weeks Bartek received $8 million in venture funding in a handshake deal honored fully by investors.

In 1999, Microtune took an existing, dollar-sized mechanical tuner with hundreds of components, expanded its functions and performance, and reduced the chip to the size of a dime to launch its first product, the single-chip MicroTunerTM tuner. Microtune, now six-years old, has grown to 1,100 employees, and has been awarded 22 U.S. patents, with more than 50 applications pending.

National EOY Finalists
The other National finalists in the Emerging EOY category was Brian E. LeGette and Ron L. Wilson, co-CEOs of Big Bang Products, LLC, inventors of numerous consumer products, from hand tools to radio-controlled toys, Baltimore, Maryland. In addition, the Southwest Area office of Ernst & Young was honored to have a second National finalist, Harland Stonecipher, the Chairman & CEO of Pre-Paid Legal Services, in the Master Entrepreneur category.
