11/27/2002 - Internazionale Medico Scientifica Srl (I.M.S.) of Bologna, Italy, and Analogic of Peabody, Massachusetts, USA, announced that they have established a five-year strategic alliance for the exchange of product, technology and know-how related to the field of mammography.
Bruno Toniolo, founder and President of I.M.S., stated, “Full-field digital mammography (FFDM) provides technological challenges that I.M.S. has been striving to meet for some time and in which we have invested much time and effort. This alliance with Analogic, a world leader in health imaging technology, enables I.M.S to further strengthen our radiological equipment technologies and gives us the pride to share our experience with such a reputable partner. The alliance will be especially beneficial to the growth of our innovative FFDM system, the Giotto Image MD.”
I.M.S. recently completed a clinical trial of its Giotto Image MD mammography system on over 300 patients in the Breast Care Department at Maggiore Hospital of Bologna, Italy, using the amorphous selenium flat-panel detectors designed and manufactured by Analogic subsidiary, Anrad Corporation. Under separate agreement, Anrad, based in Quebec, Canada, will supply amorphous-selenium-based, flat panel detectors to I.M.S.
The Giotto Image MD uses Anrad’s amorphous selenium technology to capture images, allowing for direct conversion from X-rays to electrical charges. Direct conversion offers the advantages of higher Detection Quantum Efficiency (DQE) and sharper images. I.M.S. is preparing to forward the full pre-market approval (PMA) documentation on the Giotto Image MD to the FDA by January 31, 2003.
Since 1965 I.M.S has been manufacturing radiological equipment, directly overseeing the entire production process from engineering design to final assembly. Located in Pontecchio Marconi, Bologna, Italy, I.M.S. exports its products, mainly related to breast care, all over the world through exclusive distributors.
Analogic Corporation is a leading designer and manufacturer of advanced health and security systems and subsystems sold to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). The Company is recognized worldwide for advancing the state of the art in Computed Tomography (CT), Digital Radiography (DR), Ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Patient Monitoring, Cardiovascular Information Management, and Embedded Multiprocessing.
