11/21/2002 - Equator Technologies, a provider of high-performance, programmable and power-efficient system-on-a-chip (SoC) processors for video streaming and image processing applications, announced that the company will demonstrate the video processing performance of its MAP Series of processors, in particular its BSPTM-15 processor, at CableLabs' CableNET Pavilion at Broadband Plus 2002 in Anaheim, Calif. next month.
The company will demonstrate three distinct consumer technology applications that utilize its BSP chip family, including:
Microsoft® Windows Media 9 Series
Leading the way in adapting to the latest and most advanced compression algorithms, Equator's flagship BSP-15 processor is the first embedded processor to decode high-definition Windows Media 9 Series audio and video in real-time. Video-centric devices utilizing low bit-rate codecs like Windows Media 9 Series can enable a number of new consumer applications, including streaming high-quality video content without being constrained by “last mile” infrastructure, and allowing more content to be delivered per channel (versus using MPEG-2 with the comparable bandwidth). Powered by the BSP processor, Equator's TetraTM Platform enables video-centric device manufacturers to take advantage of advanced, low bit-rate decoders without sacrificing the price/performance or small footprint that is appropriate for their markets.
Equator Broadband VOD Reference Platform
The Equator Broadband VOD Reference Platform provides a hardware and software design reference for an IP-based Video-on-Demand set-top box. Based on Equator's BSP processor, this small form-factor, high-performance, programmable platform delivers an unbeatable set of features at a much lower price than systems built with fixed-function ASICs and ASSPs. The Equator VOD Platform is codec independent, with the ability to utilize MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and other proprietary, low bit-rate codecs.
The Equator Broadband VOD Reference Platform shortens the time to deployment by providing a complete hardware and software reference design for a low bit-rate VOD application with Internet access and EPG capabilities. The Equator Broadband VOD Reference Platform application breaks the one-megabit barrier for near-DVD quality video. It can achieve video quality comparable to MPEG-2 at a more than 75% reduction in bandwidth.
Embedded Home Videoconferencing
The Equator Home Video Conferencing Reference Design provides a complete hardware and software solution to integrate IP-based video-conferencing functionality into video-centric consumer devices. This reference design is based on Equator's BSP SoC processor, Tetra Hardware Platform and a new "personality" module built specifically for media and communications applications. The platform incorporates industry-leading IP-based video conferencing software to deliver the most powerful and flexible VLIW digital media processing technology in conjunction with best-of-breed video conferencing functionality that includes high-quality audio and echo cancellation, PBX capabilities and Quality of Service software.
Equator's Video Conferencing Reference Platform includes all the tools necessary for customers to evaluate, design, test, develop and integrate VC functionality into their video-centric consumer products, including STBs and PVRs. This optimized, programmable, end-to-end solution allows for a faster time-to-market, a more flexible implementation and an easier upgrade cycle than in-house developed solutions that utilize application-specific circuitry.
