11/20/2002 - Demonstrating acceptance of its just-introduced ASAP Logic products, semiconductor intellectual property (IP) platform leader Virage Logic announced that LSI Logic has licensed its ASAP Metal Programmable Cells for use in their RapidChipTM silicon platform. RapidChip addresses a new and expanding customer base whose technology and cost requirements are not optimally served by FPGA or ASIC products.
Based on Virage Logic's patented routing methodology and cell architecture, the metal programmable cells allow designers to create custom devices with a few metal layers and via masks. The ASAP Metal Programmable Cells provide this flexibility while maintaining the high levels of performance and density required by today's multi-million gate designs.
The LSI Logic RapidChip platform, announced in September 2002, combines the high-density, high-performance and proven IP benefits of cell-based ASICs with the customization and fast time-to-market advantages of an FPGA to considerably reduce the design-through-production cycle. This is achieved through families of market specific silicon platforms with proven IP, tools and methodologies that increase predictability, and application sets that give customers a significant head-start in developing a design and integration environment.
"Library architecture is one of several elements that enable the design time reduction provided by RapidChip," said Michael Eneboe, vice president, Programmable Platforms, LSI Logic. "Virage Logic's ASAP Cells provided us significant advantages in performance and density over other available technologies that we investigated."
User feedback demonstrates that Virage Logic's innovative metal programmable architecture consistently yields smaller designs without sacrificing performance. And unlike other solutions available on the market, ASAP Metal Programmable Cells use existing design tools and design flows so there is no need for new investment in EDA tools, methodologies or training.
"For some time we have understood that cost would be prohibitive in the successful deployment of small to medium volume ASICs," said Adam Kablanian, president and CEO, Virage Logic. "LSI Logic's decision to select our ASAP Metal Programmable Cells validates our ability to develop a mature logic product and quickly respond to market needs."
ASAP Metal Programmable Cells are most beneficial to designers looking for a solution to create Application Customized Standard Parts (ACSP), or semiconductor platforms for small to medium volume ICs, or a method to perform rapid correction of a new functionality. ASAP High Speed Metal Programmable cells are available today to fabless users on TSMC's 0.13 micron high performance process.
