11/20/2002 - Targeting handheld applications powered by common battery types, Texas Instruments (TI) announced a synchronous step-up DC/DC converter with a low dropout (LDO) linear regulator that will allow battery capacity to be used more efficiently. Designers of a wide range of portable applications, such as Internet audio players, personal digital assistants (PDAs), digital still cameras and other portable equipment, will benefit from the device´s high efficiency, integration, small size and design flexibility.
TI's new TPS61107, part of TI's recently announced TPS611x family of DC/DC converter/LDO power management ICs, offers a complete, cost-efficient power supply solution for systems powered by single- and dual-cell alkaline, NiCd and NiMH batteries. Pulse-width modulation (PWM) switching results in up to 95 percent conversion efficiency, prolonging battery life. The converter generates two stable output voltages, 3.3V with the boost converter stage and 1.8V with the LDO stage. The TPS61107 stays in operation with supply voltages as low as 0.8V.
The TPS61107 can be disabled to minimize battery drain. During shutdown of a portable device, the power load is completely disconnected from the battery, which is especially useful in microcontroller applications where the microcontroller or microprocessor should not remain active due to the stored voltage on the output capacitors. A low-electromagnetic interference (EMI) mode is implemented in the device to lower the radiated electromagnetic energy when the converter enters the discontinuous conduction mode. The built-in LDO can be used for a second 1.8V output voltage derived either from the boost output or directly from the battery.
Availability, Packaging and Pricing
The TPS61107 device is available in volume today from TI and the company´s authorized distributors. The device is available in a 20-pin thin shrink small outline package (TSSOP) or in a 24-pin QFN package. Suggested pricing for the TPS61107 is $1.75 per 1,000 units.
