11/19/2002 - Multi-Tech Systems, a leading data communications and telecommunications company based in suburban Minneapolis announces a new line of its MultiVOIP Voice over IP gateways with integrated gatekeepers. The new MultiVOIPs provide an economical way for users to centrally manage phone books in dispersed VOIP networks plus control how H.323 voice traffic is managed. In addition, the new gateways feature enhancements include PSTN fail over to ensure operation in case of a network failure, H.450 supplementary services that provides for telephony management, and T.38 support that ensures IP interoperability for any fax equipment supporting the standard. The following new Multi-Tech VoIP gateways featuring an integrated gatekeeper and enhancements are now shipping:
MultiVOIP MVP210-G H.323/SIP compatible two-port desktop voice and fax over IP gateway with integrated gatekeeper and ten concurrent call license sells for a MSRP of US$1599. Unit can be upgraded for additional concurrent call licenses.
MultiVOIP MVP410-G H.323/SIP compatible four-port 1U rack-mounted voice and fax over IP gateway with integrated gatekeeper and 20 concurrent call license sells for an MSRP of US$2749. Unit can be upgraded for additional concurrent call licenses.
MultiVOIP MVP810-G H.323/SIP compatible eight-port 1U rack-mounted voice and fax over IP gateway with integrated gatekeeper and 30 concurrent call license sells an MSRP of US$4299.
“When an organization’s Voice over IP network first expands to the point where a gatekeeper is needed, they often experience ‘sticker shock’ when investigating PC-based alternatives,” said Chip Harleman, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Multi-Tech Systems, Inc. “Our design of a fully functional gatekeeper, within the same hardware as the gateway, provides an economical alternative. By purchasing one of our integrated gatekeepers for a network, administrators can manage a central database of phone numbers for all network locations. The gatekeeper adds simplicity to the solution because adding future nodes only requires updating the gatekeeper and not all other locations. With the new pricing structure administrators can start out with a smaller license option and grow the gatekeeper’s functionality to accommodate a larger number of concurrent calls within the same unit. It is an elegant way to evolve the management needs of small VOIP networks into larger, more sophisticated ones without the need for expensive PC-based gatekeepers.”
The new line of MultiVOIP Voice over IP gateways with integrated gatekeepers not only provides straightforward means of managing phonebooks for multi-node Voice over IP networks, but it includes a number of enhancements also available on Multi-Tech’s entire line of VOIP gateways. Prominent among these new features are PSTN fail-over, H.450 supplementary services, and T.38 fax support.
PSTN fail over enables call routing over the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) when the IP network fails. While calls are routed to the PSTN, continued IP network monitoring allows for a safe return to IP operation when conditions improve.
H.450 supplementary services provide PBX-like capabilities between MultiVOIP locations including; call transfer, call forwarding, call hold, call waiting, and name identification. It also supports Q.SIG, an inter-PBX signaling protocol, for networking PBX supplementary services in a multi- or single- vendor environment. And, with support for Dual Tone Multifrequency (DTMF) tone detection, users can access their voice mail over the VOIP network.
T.38 is the ITU (International Telecommunications Union) interoperability standard for real time fax communications between different vendor fax machines communicating over IP networks. Providing substantial savings as an alternative to fax communications using the PSTN, this feature enables MultiVOIPs to transfer fax material between any of its IP locations from any equipment which supports T.38 fax.
