11/19/2002 - Atmel® announced that its FingerChipTM Biometric sensor as well as an Atmel integrated Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) solution have been incorporated into select models of the new HP iPAQ Pocket PC h5400 series.
The Atmel technologies are two of the key new features and options available in the h5400 series of the HP iPAQ Pocket PC, the leading Pocket PC on the market.
The Atmel FingerChip fingerprint sensor enables users of the iPAQ Pocket PC to logon with a swipe of their finger. This provides a dual benefit of higher security and the convenience of not having to type in a password. The small size of this thermal sensor required for integration in this Pocket PC is achieved by using Atmel's patented image reconstruction technology. This sensor captures successive images as the finger is pulled across the sensor and then reconstructs it to a full fingerprint image that allows for identification.
The Atmel WLAN reference design, utilizing the RF Micro Devices, Inc. (Nasdaq: RFMD), radio front end, meets and exceeds the requirements for USB 802.11b usage in mobile computing. This reference design based on Atmel's Media Access Controller (MAC) provides system designers with a small form factor, low power and high performance system that is well suited for integration in portable applications.
"Atmel is pleased to provide these key technologies for HP's cutting-edge Pocket PCs. We feel that the innovation of HP's Pocket PC sets new standards for enhancing the user experience in portable computing," said Jeff Katz Atmel's Senior VP of Corporate Marketing.
"HP had a vision of key options for this generation Pocket PC, and Atmel's diverse product offering made integration of biometrics and WLAN possible when we needed them," said Cindy Box, Director of Marketing, HP Smart Handhelds.
