Getmapping.com Selects SANnet for Aerial Photo Database

11/14/2002 - Dot Hill announced that its SANnet® storage systems are in use by Getmapping PLC, which has built a 2.5 terabyte online database of aerial photos of the United Kingdom and Spain. Getmapping uses a combination of SANnet systems and Dot Hillís ultra-slim RAID Blade in both direct attached and storage area network configurations.

In 1998, Getmapping began an ambitious project to produce the first complete and continuous seamless aerial photographic image of the UK, called the Millennium Map. By 2001, the company completed mapping most of the UK and launched a pay-per-view online service, Imagexpress, which allows users to receive the map-accurate digital imagery online. The service is targeted to architects, surveyors, property developers and real estate agents. It enables them to view sites through the Internet from any location. Getmapping also sells a variety of other digital photographic products for business, consumer and education markets from its website www.getmapping.com.

The imagery is used in many professional and consumer applications including map updating, environmental analysis, regional planning and can be seen in a number of "coffee table" books. Getmappingís innovative approach to this rapidly developing market continues to secure its position as the leading provider of aerial photography in the UK.

"Dot Hill helped us meet the challenge of how to reliably store and continuously update our growing database of aerial photography," said Joe Ellis, technical director of Getmapping. "The digital photos must be accessible around the clock for customer retrieval via the Internet, so high availability is critical. We chose Dot Hillís SANnet systems not only for reliability and performance, but also for its ability to seamlessly scale as our storage needs grow."

"We worked very closely with the Getmapping staff to understand the unique requirements of storing, updating and accessing their ever-changing aerial photography database," said Bert van der Woning, managing director of Dot Hill EMEA. "SANnetís modular architecture provides cost-effective scalability for our customersí growing storage requirements."
