Agilent Technologies Introduces 100 MBd Digital Isolators

11/13/2002 - Agilent Technologies announced a new family of high-speed digital isolators, capable of transmitting data at a 100-megabaud (MBd) rate. The 3.3V and 5V isolators offer both high package density and low current consumption, with less than 10 ľA per input channel and less than 2 mA per output channel.

Digital isolators separate and protect sensitive circuitry to allow safe interface between high and low voltages in electronic systems. The Agilent HCPL-90xx/-09xx family of high-speed digital isolators is available in product configurations that range from one to four channels, with each device also available in a unidirectional and bi-directional configuration. The new isolators deliver a data rate of 100 MBd with 2 ns typical pulse width distortion and 10 ns typical propagation delay, enabling a high data transmission rate over longer lines.

These UL1577-approved high-speed digital isolators are ideal for communication bus isolation, multiplexed data transmission, digital isolation for analog-to-digital conversion, digital I/O ports, computer peripheral interfaces, and microprocessor system interfaces. In these applications, galvanic isolation reduces or eliminates ground-loop noise and common-mode voltage effects and the possible consequent damage to the interface and associated circuitry.

The HCPL-90xx/-09xx digital isolators are high-speed CMOS devices integrated with giant magnetoresistive (GMR) technology. In GMR isolators, a signal at the input induces a current in a low-inductance coil, producing a proportional magnetic field. The resulting magnetic field changes the electrical resistance of the GMR material, which in turn is analyzed via a CMOS integrated circuit, and the output is an accurate reproduction of the input signal.

U.S. Pricing and Availability
The Agilent HCPL-90xx/-09xx high-speed digital isolators are available in single, dual and quad channels in both unidirectional and bi-directional configurations. Depending on the device, package options include 8-pin DIP, 8-pin GullWing, 8-pin SO, 16-pin SO narrow body and wide body, in both tube and tape-and-reel form. All devices are available now, with samples available via Agilent's online sample system. U.S. pricing ranges from $2.12 for a single channel up to $5.66 for a bi-directional quad-channel (10 k - 25 K quantities).
