11/11/2002 - Atmel® announced that Atmel's AT76C506 Media Access Controller (MAC) with integrated baseband controller will provide an integrated 802.11b Wireless Local Area network (WLAN) solution for the Compaq Tablet PC TC1000 from HP. The mini-PCI based design, which includes WLAN and a modem, is based on Atmel's reference design with the RF Micro Devices radio front end. The AT76C506 MAC plus baseband, with integrated PCI interface for mini-PCI applications, is one of three MAC plus baseband devices Atmel has recently announced.
"HP is demonstrating their product leadership once again. We feel HP's decision to integrate WLAN into many of their product offerings is fueling the already explosive growth of Wi-Fi products," said Richard Bisset, Product Marketing Director of Atmel's Multimedia Communications Product Group. "Atmel is excited to have been selected to provide WLAN capability for the Compaq Tablet PC TC1000. We feel selection by HP validates Atmel's capability to provide high performing custom or standard WLAN solutions."
As part of the Compaq Tablet PC, the highly integrated AT76C506 MAC enables higher performance, smaller size, a more competitive Bill of Materials (BOM), as well as support for the new security standards or protocols.
"HP's WLAN solution for the Tablet PC has unique requirements and Atmel is able to offer a cost- effective solution without sacrificing performance," said Robin Castell, Communications Technology Manager, HP Personal Systems Group.
Atmel offers complete, Wi-FiTM certifiable, WLAN reference designs centered on Atmel's single chip MAC plus baseband controllers and RFMD's radio front-end. These reference designs include schematics, gerber board layout files, firmware, software, WHQL qualified drivers and utilities for regulatory certifications and production tests. By providing a complete WLAN reference design, Atmel enables customers to reduce costs, accelerate time-to-market and improve key performance metrics such as throughput, receiver sensitivity, and range versus leading competitive solutions.
