Sun Positioned as a 'Leader' in Magic Quadrant

11/7/2002 - Sun Microsystems, a leader in systems and solutions that make the Net work, has been positioned as a leader within Gartner's latest Messaging Servers Magic Quadrant ("Magic Quadrant for Messaging Servers," October 2002). Gartner's Magic Quadrant maps Gartner's assessment of the vendor's 'Breadth of Vision' against its 'Ability to Execute'. Sun is positioned in the top right Leader quadrant. According to Gartner, Leaders are vendors who are performing well today, have a clear vision of market direction and are actively building competencies to sustain their leadership position in the market.

Sun customers have been able to lower their operating costs, improve overall security and significantly improve the manageability of their enterprise networks by consolidating hundreds of IBM Lotus or Microsoft Exchange servers to a few Sun servers running the integrated SunTM ONE communications platform - the Sun ONE Messaging Server, Sun ONE Calendar Server and Sun ONE Instant Messaging Server - on the award-winning SolarisTM Operating Environment. These products are key components of the Sun Open Net Environment (Sun ONE), the integration of Sun's award-winning portfolio of software products with Sun's vision, architecture, platform and expertise to enable the development and delivery of JavaTM Web Services.

"As enterprises expand the penetration of e-mail deeper into their organizations, they are looking for more scalable, more reliable, and less expensive solution," said Joyce Graff, a vice president and research director at Gartner Inc. "The industry is moving toward modular systems, built on standards, increasingly using Web interfaces and mobile devices."

"Traditional groupware offerings such as Microsoft Exchange offer a total cost of ownership that is an order of magnitude higher than that of the Sun ONE Messaging Server," said Stephen Pelletier, vice president network identity, communication, and portal products for Sun Microsystems, Inc. "Increasingly, enterprises are choosing Sun — a much more scalable and secure alternative — to lower the total cost of ownership of their mail, calendar and instant messaging solutions."

The Magic Quadrant is Gartner Inc.'s opinion and is an analytical representation of a marketplace at and for a specific time period. It measures vendors against Gartner Inc.-defined criteria for a marketplace. The positioning of vendors within a Magic Quadrant is based on the complex interplay of many factors. Gartner Inc. does not advise enterprises to select only those firms in the Leaders segment. In some situations, firms in the Visionary, Challenger, or Niche Player segments may be the right match for an enterprise's requirements. Well-informed vendor selection decisions should rely on more than a Magic Quadrant.
