11/7/2002 - Cypress MicroSystems announced that Elektromed has selected Cypress MicroSystems’ Programmable System on ChipTM (PSoCTM) technology to add advanced capabilities and lower development costs of its electronic metering systems. PSoC products are based on a configurable mixed-signal array with an on-board controller, providing embedded designers with a low-cost, single-chip solution for a variety of consumer, industrial and control applications.
With a wide range of offerings, Elektromed is the world’s largest supplier of electronic metering devices that monitor gas, water and electricity usage. As an increasing number of European municipalities deploy pre-paid utility systems to reduce administrative overhead and prevent overdue bills, Elektromed is the first company to offer four types of pre-paid electronic meters as an alternative to traditional mechanical meters. Each of these meters can be combined into a single, integrated pre-paid system. Today, Elektromed has deployed 650,000 pre-paid gas meters and 100,000 electricity meters equipped with optical ports.
"Elektromed is addressing the challenges posed by the evolving utility marketplace," said John McDonald, vice president of marketing for Cypress MicroSystems. "By taking advantage of the capabilities and flexibility of PSoC devices, Elektromed has demonstrated significant advantages over other metering system architectures based on traditional, fixed-function microcontrollers. We look forward to a growing relationship with Elektromed and expect that their designs will spur adoption of the PSoC family in this and other markets."
"The integrated analog and digital resources of a PSoC device provide a one-chip solution for our metering systems, which would otherwise require external components," said Ercan Ertas, engineering director for Elektromed. "By using Cypress MicroSystems’ unique IC, we are able to reduce the number of components in our product by 17 percent and shorten our development cycle by re-using design elements across our entire product line."
About the PSoC Family
The PSoC device family integrates programmable blocks of analog and digital logic, a fast 8-bit CPU, 8 to 16 Kbytes of Flash memory and 256 bytes of SRAM. PSoC provides designers with a flexible architecture that can be configured for a broad range of embedded applications and dynamically reconfigured to extend the capabilities and value of their product. The PSoC platform typically reduces customer development time by 33 percent and lowers bill of material (BOM) costs by an average of $5, by significantly reducing the number of chips required for solutions utilizing a traditional microcontroller and discrete digital and analog components.
