MontaVista Linux Powers Sony’s New Internet-Connected Personal Video Recorder

11/6/2002 - MontaVista Software, the company powering the embedded revolution, announced that MontaVistaTM Linux® Professional Edition 2.1 is the chosen operating system for the CoCoon Channel Server, the new Internet-connected Personal Video Recorder (PVR) from Sony.

MontaVista Linux supports a range of enhanced interactive features in advanced consumer electronics products such as CoCoon, by providing high performance, real-time capability and service reliability. MontaVista Linux is the widely used cross-development platform from MontaVista Software. According to a recent market research report from Venture Development Corporation (VDC) consumer electronics is the fastest growing market segment for Linux, at an annual growth rate of 49.0% and reaching $149.6 million in shipments by 2006. VDC also estimated that consumer electronics will be the largest segment of the embedded Linux market by 2006 with 43.2 percent of total revenue of $346 million.
