Cypress Samples WirelessUSB

11/5/2002 - Cypress Semiconductor, the industry leader in USB, announced sampling of the WirelessUSB family of products (CY694X). The Cypress CY694X is the first solution that enables manufacturers of human-interface devices (HID)—including PC mice, keyboards and gaming consoles—to ‘cut the cord’, at the same time minimizing development time, bill of materials and power requirements without sacrificing performance.

Operating at 2.4 GHz, the CY694X can connect as many as seven devices up to 10 meters (30 feet) apart, making WirelessUSB the low-cost wireless RF solution of choice for PC mice and keyboards. In addition, WirelessUSB is an ideal solution for the gaming industry; with an average latency of less than 8 milliseconds with four concurrent devices connected, WirelessUSB stands up to even the most rigorous gaming environments. Cypress’s WirelessUSB products require few external components, reducing design time and complexity and speeding time to market. WirelessUSB does not require new drivers for operating systems that support USB.

"WirelessUSB solves many of the issues designers face today in the HID market," said Cathal Phelan, vice president of Cypress’s Personal Communications Division. "Current wireless HID technology has serious limitations, while Bluetooth is overkill for these applications. Cypress’s WirelessUSB products satisfy the three critical requirements for this market: power, price and latency. They leverage our leadership in USB solutions and expand our growing personal connectivity portfolio into the wireless world."

"The current 27 MHz technology for the HID markets offers limited capabilities for mice and keyboards and does not address the gaming market at all," said Dale Ford, director of market intelligence services for iSuppli. "That technology can only support two connected devices at a time, and it’s slow and restrictive compared to solutions that offer more active nodes, lower latency and spread spectrum technology. The products that offer these features should prove compelling to HID designers and expand the marketplace for wireless HID devices."

The CY694X supports seven nodes per host and multiple separate links in the same space. Using a frequency-hopping spread-spectrum technology, the CY694X makes it possible to use multiple WirelessUSB devices in crowded offices and classrooms without fear of interference between devices. Advanced power management enables batteries to last up to six months in typical keyboard applications. Bidirectional communication makes it possible to encrypt transmitted data, ensuring a high level of security.

Cypress offers the industry’s broadest portfolio of high-performance USB 2.0 products for PC peripherals, consumer electronics and embedded systems applications—including the EZ-USB FX2 integrated microcontroller; EZ-USB SX2 intelligent serial interface engine; EZ-USB TX2 transceiver; and TetraHub hub controller. Cypress offers the right part for every USB application, either individually or as part of a complete solution including enhanced development tools and reference designs.

Price and Availability
The first devices in the CY694X family are sampling now, with production quantities scheduled for Q1’03. The WirelessUSB devices is priced at $3.92 in high volume. A development kit as well as reference designs for keyboards, mice, and game controllers are planned for release in Q1 ‘03.
