10/30/2002 - Ramtron International, the leader in next-generation nonvolatile FRAM memory products, announced the expansion of its low power ferroelectric random access memory (FRAM) product line with the introduction and availability of the 4-kilobit (Kb) FM24CL04. The new low-power consumption FRAM device offers 3-volt operations and an unlimited number of read and write cycles. The device is drop-in compatible with industry standard serial EEPROM, but with 75 micro amps active current the FM24CL04 uses 13 times less power than an EEPROM. The fast read/write operation of the FM24CL04 allows for faster programming than EEPROM on high-volume production lines, saving manufacturing assembly time and costs for FRAM customers.
"Rapid programmability of nonvolatile memory in high-volume manufacturing lines has never been possible with EEPROM devices," said Mike Alwais, Ramtron vice president of FRAM products. "The FM24CL04 also brings low-power and superior operating characteristics to the table."
The FM24CL04 FRAM is a high–performance nonvolatile memory that is ideal for high volume applications such as ink jet printers and battery-powered applications like water meters. FM24CL04 introduces a variety of possibilities for write-intensive applications, such as data collection, configuration storage and RAM expansion. In addition, the FM24CL04 is ideal nonvolatile storage, in any power sensitive system, allowing users to extend battery life and improve system performance.
Ramtron’s FM24CL04 can be programmed in under 0.5 milliseconds (ms) compared to about 0.5 seconds for an EEPROM. The FM24CL04 requires no timing delays and can be written at standard bus speeds versus EEPROM, which require a 10 ms write delay before new data can be registered. The new 3-volt device also features unlimited endurance, compared to the 1 million write cycles of an EEPROM. The FM24CL04 has an extremely low standby and operating current, which is lower than competing parts.
The FM24CL04 is a 4Kb nonvolatile RAM with an industry standard 2-wire interface and pin compatibility with industry standard 24C04 type EEPROMs. Read and writes are performed at bus speeds up to 1MHz. It operates from 2.7V to 3.6V and draws 75 micro amps for reads and writes at 100 kHz. The FM24CL04 offers 10 years of data retention and is rated over the industrial temperature range of –40C to +85C.
