Dot Hill Introduces SANnet II High Availability Data Storage Systems

10/29/2002 - Dot Hill announced its new SANnet IITM family of compact RAID and JBOD storage solutions. The SANnet II family of storage systems provides industry-leading 99.9998+ percent uptime in a compact, rugged enclosure. SANnet II brings enterprise class features into the workgroup and virtually eliminates downtime with no single points of failure. The common modular architecture of the SANnet II product family provides seamless scalability for future growth and includes:

All SANnet II products feature hot-swappable, field replaceable components including drives, controllers, power supplies, fans and event monitoring units.

"Data is just as critical to firms in the small to medium business (SMB) sector as it is to the largest enterprises," said Mike Karp, senior analyst with Enterprise Management Associates, "but SMB businesses have never been able to afford the functionality levels found in enterprise storage infrastructures. Bringing enterprise-class functionality to the SMB, departmental and workgroup segments is a clear value-add. Furthermore, the factory-configured solutions being offered by Dot Hill make this a channel-friendly product line."

Based on open standards and compatible with open systems platforms such as Windows, Linux, Solaris, HP-UX and AIX, SANnet II easily fits into existing IT infrastructures, and is available with AC or -48 VDC power. The SANnet II 2U models are available with single hot serviceable or dual hot swappable RAID controllers. The 1U Blade is available with a single removable controller. All models are also available as JBODs (just a bunch of disks).

Dot Hill’s SANscape® and SANpath® software are available for the new SANnet II systems. SANscape greatly reduces administration workloads and storage management costs by combining configuration, allocation, maintenance and monitoring tools in one easy-to-use console. It centralizes the administration of Dot Hill products across local and wide area networks and allows IT managers to see and control storage resources anywhere in the world from one location. SANpath optimizes the resiliency and performance of storage connections using multipathing to servers. It operates as a background task and requires no changes to operating systems, drivers or applications. SANpath and SANscape are available for popular platforms including Windows, Linux, Solaris, AIX and HP-UX.

Rigorous independent testing including NEBS Level 3 and MIL-STD-810F certification supports the high availability of SANnet II. The SANnet II product line can be teamed with Dot Hill’s Axis Storage ManagerTM for disaster recovery, remote replication, storage provisioning and centralized management.

The SANnet II product line has been designed with a focus not only on the SMB sector, but also OEM customers and systems integrators who offer turnkey solutions. The systems should be of particular interest to resellers and other channel customers in healthcare, government/military, financial services, telecommunications and pre-press/printing.

"We have developed the SANnet II line in conjunction with our OpenAxis IntelligenceTM strategic initiative, which brings intelligence without complexity to the storage network," said Jim Lambert, Dot Hill’s chief executive officer. "Based on what we’ve heard from our customers and channel partners, we expect this new product line to meet with much success."

The SANnet II SCSI array offers a capacity of up to 1.75TB per chassis with active-active hot-swap RAID controllers. Using only a fraction of the rack space of competing storage products, SANnet II SCSI provides businesses with a high-performance, high availability Ultra160 SCSI (Ultra320-ready) storage solution that is compact, complete, convenient and cost-effective. Because it comes factory configured, the SANnet II SCSI can be up and running in minutes with no disruption to workgroups, departments and remote offices.

"The market for SCSI storage is alive and well and is, in fact, still quite large," said Roger W. Cox, chief analyst for Gartner Dataquest's Storage Research organization. "A high-performance, high-availability SCSI system fills a need in both the entry level and the mid-range sectors."

The SANnet II SCSI products are available as modular systems or in highly optimized configurations: a high-bandwidth solution for specialized applications, a high-capacity solution for network server environments, and a high availability solution for workgroup servers. Each configuration is a complete solution featuring redundant hot-swap components. SANnet II SCSI is the industry’s most reliable, yet affordable DAS solution providing maximum uptime for business continuance.

The SANnet II Bandwidth solution uses and is well suited to image processing, web streaming and digital media applications. The SANnet II Capacity solution scales up to 36 drives and 5.25 terabytes and includes a single RAID controller. This solution is targeted to application servers, network services and file and print servers. The SANnet II Availability solution is fully redundant for total protection offering dual paths to the server and automatic failover. It delivers up to 210 megabytes per second sustained transfer rate and up to 40,000 I/O per second. It is targeted to database, messaging and collaborative environments.

SANnet II FC is an end-to-end, 2Gbit Fibre Channel storage system with 12 drive bays and scales up to 192 drives and 28TB. The FC model has single or dual RAID controllers, up to twelve 2Gbit full fabric FC ports and 100 percent hot swappable components in a 2U enclosure. Its extremely high-bandwidth architecture achieves transfer rates up to 1,400 megabytes (MB) per second and transaction rates up to 160,000 I/O per second from protected cache. SANnet II FC supports up to 1024 individual volumes (LUNs) and provides secure LUN masking for multiple server environments. Consequently, critical business information is easily and quickly accessible, but only to designated users.

SANnet II Blade
The ultra-slim 1U (1.75 inches high) member of the SANnet II family, the Blade, is ideally suited for environments where space is at premium, yet reliability is critical. The Blade is an Ultra160 SCSI storage system with four drive bays accommodating 36GB, 73GB or 146GB drives. It is optimized for speeds up to 100MB per second sustained transfer rate and up to 20,000 I/O per second. The SANnet II Blade is available with a single RAID controller or JBOD and can support one or two hosts.

Pricing and Availability
Starting at a list price of under $10,000, SANnet II SCSI will be generally available during the fourth quarter of 2002. The SANnet II FC and the SANnet II Blade are expected to be generally available in the first quarter of 2003.
