Oak Technology and Software 2000 Announce Technology Agreement

10/28/2002 - Oak Technology, a leading provider of embedded solutions for optical storage and digital imaging markets, announced an agreement with Software 2000, the world's leading independent printer driver technology provider, for the right to develop and distribute raster laser printer drivers based on Software 2000's Sorcerer Driver Development Kit (DDK).

This partnership enables Oak and Software 2000 to provide complete reference platforms in the rapidly growing low-end, laser printer/multifunction peripheral market. Oak is currently developing a series of reference platforms based on its Quatro SOC architecture. These platforms will provide customers with a complete solution that includes hardware, firmware and host drivers.

Oak expects that prices of desktop color laser printers will continue to fall and create increased demand by consumers. To address the demand for this specific market, Oak will develop hardware based on the OTI-4110, Oak's highly integrated system-on-a-chip which is based on the Quatro architecture, and the PM-1100, Oak's newest laser Pulse Width Modulator (PWM) ASIC. Firmware will be based on Oak's IPS (Integrated Print System) software, allowing support for both raster and page description language (PDL) based printers. Host drivers will incorporate Software 2000's proven technology; a highly efficient and cost-effective object oriented development environment that delivers unique, highly competitive printer drivers for Windows, Mac and Linux from a single source. The availability of these and future reference platforms will position original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to launch products rapidly and capitalize on this growing market segment.

"This deal solidifies Oak's commitment to the emerging low-end market space and strategically positions us to quickly capture market share. Working with a market leader like Software 2000 has allowed us to efficiently enhance our product offerings" explained Simon Dolan, senior vice president and general manager, Oak Technology's Imaging Group. Carl Spires, group sales director, Software 2000 added, "Oak is an excellent development partner for us because our core technologies and competencies are so well suited. The integration of our Sorcerer based raster printer drivers with Oak's newest laser technologies will provide OEMs with the very best cost-effective platforms to enable them to be successful in this market."
