BivarOpto Introduces Super Flux Mako LED Series Featuring RGB Color for Full-Color, Full-Spectrum High-Intensity Out Door Lighting Applications

10/28/2002 - BivarOpto, the Optoelectronics Division of Bivar, has introduced the new RGB (Red/Green/Blue) Super Flux Mako LED Series, providing unlimited color possibilities in a modular display format. RGB capabilities allow designers to create any color imaginable, including white and purple, while the modular design enables the LEDs to be fitted tightly together to create a grid-type solid color display. These feature combine to provide a unique solution - unlimited color choices in a grid array without gaps, and a reduced number of LEDs.

The RGB LEDs utilize a large heatsink, reflector based lead frame that allows the placement of three individually addressable LED die. Each LED chip shares the basic optics, reflector and lens, with the other two chips creating three unique LEDs. The design engineer can then vary the amount of current in each chip to achieve any color desired, allowing communication of a greater number of messages in a single LED.

Incorporating an integrated heatsink that allows for high current capabilities, the RGB Super Flux Mako LED Series features a continuous forward current of 100mA and average forward current of 30mA at 2.4 - 4.6 VF. The new LEDs are ideally suited for full-color outdoor applications such as moving message signs, traffic signs, stadium scoreboards, automotive, or any application where a full color LED with unique high-density, high-intensity light is desired. Rigid 0.200 inch (5.08 mm) "grid-spaced" PCB pins with integral standoffs allow insertion into industry-standard through-hole circuitry. Other outstanding features include a small footprint of only 0.30 inch (7.62 mm) square, wavelengths from 400nm to 700nm, and a wide 60 degree viewing angle.

"The new RGB MAKO LEDs enable more messaging through its RGB capabilities while conserving valuable board space," said Anthony Vilgiate, Bivar Vice President Strategic Business Development. "Using only one chip to create three unique LED colors in one modular package allows increased versatility and economies for designers looking for increasingly sophisticated solutions to color requirements within limited space."

Immediately available from stock, typical pricing in production quantities is $1.50 each.
