10/25/2002 - Improving operating characteristics for high-speed communications, Texas Instruments launches a line of low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) translator solutions that offer greater signal integrity and power savings than currently available products. Designed as drop-in replacements for existing market solutions, the new SN65LVDS100 device uses 67 percent less power than competitive LVPECL devices. Among the applications that will benefit from these improved features are wireless base stations, optical networking and high-definition video.
TI's SN65LVDS100 operates as an LVDS to LVDS repeater or as an LVPECL to LVDS or a CML to LVDS translator, while the SN65LVDS101 is an LVPECL to LVPECL repeater that can also function as an LVDS or CML to LVPECL translator. These devices offer the industry's lowest total jitter at 65 picoseconds (max) while operating at 2.0 gigabits per second (Gbps), as well as the widest common mode input range available.
The LVDS122 is the industry's fastest, lowest-jitter 2x2 LVDS crosspoint switch that includes LVDS outputs and either LVDS or LVPECL inputs. Offering speeds at 1.5 Gbps, the LVDS122 is well suited for Gigabit Ethernet, OC-12 Clock Distribution and other applications where system availability is critical. The device can also operate as a dual differential repeater/translator and a 1:2 splitter.
"TI's new LVDS translator/repeaters and cross points extend the low power consumption and low EMI benefits of LVDS to speeds up to 2 Gbps thus providing a true low jitter alternative to legacy ECL solutions," said David Mulcahy, product marketing manager for interface products at TI. "Our roadmap has been defined with customer inputs. We want them to know they can come to TI for system-level application support with their current and future designs A 3.3 V supply operation eliminates the need for a 5 V rail in 3.3 V only systems, and uses much less power than LVPECL solutions. A reference voltage pin is made available for operation with single-ended LVPECL inputs.
The new low-power LVDS solutions complement TI's wide portfolio of interface products. Customers who design with the low-power devices have available a range of interface solutions from TI for future redesigns of their communications products. Other high-performance TI solutions designed for use in these types of systems include operational amplifiers, data converters, power management solutions, digital signal processors (DSPs) and application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs).
Availability, packaging and pricing
TI's new LVDS100/101 translator solutions are available in an 8-pin D-SOIC and DGK-MSOP packaging. The SN65LVDS100/101 devices are available now at a planned price of $2.52 in quantities of 1,000. The SN65LVDS122 2x2 cross point is available now in a 16-pin D-SOIC and PW-TSSOP package, with planned pricing of $4.75 each in quantities of 1,000.
