Avnet Applied Computing Launches Avnet FastBuild, an Online Tool to Quickly Configure Custom White Boxes

10/24/2002 - Avnet Applied Computing launched its newest weapon in the battle to reduce the time-to-market concerns of its system builder and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) customers — Avnet FastBuild.

This online configuration tool allows Avnet Applied Computing customers to quickly create customized white-box desktops or servers to meet any application. Avnet FastBuild combines this easy-to-use tool with powerful, unique elements, designed to provide a superior user experience and end product — not a white box, but a "Right Box."

These elements include:

  • Name-brand components — Avnet FastBuild offers only the most trusted name-brand components from Intel, Micron, Fujitsu, IBM, Western Digital and others. There are no second-tier or no-name components inside the Right Box.
  • Pre-configured and pre-tested — Even though Avnet FastBuild allows users to custom-build their systems, all component combinations have been validated by Avnet Applied Computing's engineers to work seamlessly with each other. No need for customers to stay abreast of the newest technology road maps or bench-test products again.
  • Fast configuration and fast delivery — The intuitive Avnet FastBuild user interface allows users to set up even complex multi-processor servers and RAID storage arrays in minutes, and many Avnet FastBuild orders are shipped in as few as 72 hours, depending on configuration and component availability.
  • Zero-inventory model — By relying on Avnet FastBuild for their white boxes, customers can free up their capital by allowing Avnet Applied Computing to carry the computing components they need, rather than risk stocking short life-cycle product themselves.

Ships as parts or fully integrated — Some system builders simply want to build their customers' computers themselves, so they know the system inside and out before the customer takes delivery. Avnet FastBuild gives those customers the option to receive the same name brand, pre-tested components, fully integrated and ready to go out of the box, or as a kit, for a few dollars less.

"We've taken all the input and suggestions from our work with white-box manufacturers and rolled them into a powerful, elegant online tool that gives them everything they are looking for in a white-box solution," said Ed Kamins, president of Avnet Applied Computing.

"By relying on Avnet FastBuild, system builders no longer have to worry about managing inventory, tracking product roadmaps or testing compatibility. They can install our Right Boxes in their customers' environments with confidence, knowing that every Right Box takes advantage of all the technical, integration, logistics and support expertise that we can bring to bear on the customers' behalf. That is the Right Box experience."
