RadiSys to Provide Microcode for use in ATM and Ethernet Solutions Based on Intel Network Processors

10/23/2002 - RadiSys announced that it will work with Intel to develop microcode that will enable wireless solutions based on Intel® IXP network processors. Intel will refer manufacturers of wireless infrastructure products to RadiSys for its IXP2400/2800 Microcode Solutions Library (MSL). The RadiSys MSL contains solutions for development of wireless infrastructure products, specifically, Ethernet and IP, ATM, and PDH solutions.

"We believe that the combination of the Intel IXP2400 and IXP2800 network processors and a robust set of customized software from companies like RadiSys provides makers of wireless network equipment with a powerful solution that reduces their time-to-market."

Wireless products, such as base station controllers (BSC) and radio network controllers (RNC), typically combine ATM or PDH connectivity with an Ethernet back end. Currently, the wireless industry is transitioning from 2G to 2.5G to 3G. This dynamic environment highlights the value of choosing network processor-based solutions for these products, rather than ASIC-based solutions. The Intel IXP network processors can handle these ATM-to-Ethernet interfaces and were designed specifically to address the OC-12 to OC-192 market segments. Additionally, the IXP network processors facilitate easy Gigabit Ethernet switching that enables data rates of up to 10 Gbps.

The RadiSys MSL offers the microblocks and frameworks for faster, smoother development of communications products based on the Intel IXP family of network processors. With the RadiSys MSL portfolio, developers can add microcode for all three types of network protocols (ATM, PDH, and Ethernet/IP) to their hardware.
