10/23/2002 - Cypress Semiconductor announced plans to deliver interoperability between its network search engines (NSEs) and Intel IXP network processors. Through the support of the Look-Aside (LA-1) interface, Cypressís AyamaTM family of NSEs and VicharaTM family Network Coprocessors will seamlessly interface to the Intel® IXP2400 and IXP2800 network processors. This interoperability will enable customers to design network-processing subsystems without additional glue logic, resulting in significant savings in board space, cost, and development time.
"Due to the programmability, cost, and time-to-market advantages of Intelís IXP network processors, our customers are increasingly adopting them for high-performance networking applications," said Geoff Charubin, director of marketing at Cypress. "As Intelís network processors deliver processing capabilities at 2.5 Gbps (OC-48) and 10 Gbps (OC-192) line rates, Cypressís NSEs play an instrumental role for accelerating packet searches and producing deterministic results. This will enable system designers to get the most out of their packet-processing systems."
"As our mutual customers increasingly adopt network processors, they will have the ability to benefit from the seamless interoperability between Intel IXP network processors and the Ayama 20000 family of NSEs," said Nick Finamore, general manager of Intelís Network Processor Division.
Cypress is a member of the Intel® Internet Exchange Architecture (Intel IXA) Developer Network and is working to optimize its network processing solutions to operate with and take advantage of the unique features and capabilities of Intel IXP network processors. By working closely with Intel to ensure compliance with current and future network processor standards, Cypress can simplify component integration and leverage software investments by reusing code, thereby dramatically speeding time-to-market and lowering development costs.
Cypressís Network Search Engines and Coprocessors
Cypress offers the industryís widest selection of network search solutions, including network search engines and network coprocessors. Cypressís packet processing solutions are ideal for use in routers, switches, and other high-performance networking infrastructure systems.
Cypressís broad array of products includes the current 32K-, 64K-, 128K-, and 256K- IP entry NSE70000 family. The current devices are configurable from 34- to 288-bit data widths to support Layer 2 to Layer 7 applications. These NSEs can search the network database at up to 100 MSPS, enabling packet processing at wire speeds greater than 2.5 Gbps. Cypressís network coprocessor manages the interaction between existing industry standard network processors and Cypress NSEs. The NCP80192 coprocessor accelerates packet processing by offloading tasks from network processors and facilitating database management. The coprocessorís programmable 32-channel descriptor ring supports multiple contexts, each of which can be programmed independently.
The Ayama 20000 family of NSEs from Cypress will provide multiple densities, from 128K IP entries (4.5 Mb) to 512K IP entries (18 Mbit). Ayama NSEs will offer innovative features for exceptional performance ó as fast as 266 million searches per second (MSPS). Such features include Mini-KeyTM power management, which can reduce power consumption by up to 70%; Soft PriorityTM table management, which can drastically reduce table-update latencies; and Multi-SearchTM processing, which can effectively double search performance.
