10/22/2002 - Vitesse Semiconductor announced the industry's highest density, channelized, multi-service, virtual concatenation (VC) mappers, the VSC9118 and VSC9115. These powerful and unified standards-based products offer integrated backplane interfaces and quadruple density compared to competing solutions for data over SONET/SDH applications. The VSC9118 and VSC9115 address the challenges OEMs face in the optical Metro market — the need to satisfy design requirements with the highest capacity available at the lowest cost. This is achieved by allowing equipment vendors to design a single board for data over SONET applications that support both 2.5G and 10G data rates with increased port density resulting in a dramatic cost reduction. The VSC9118 and VSC9115 support OC-192/STM-64, quad OC-48/STM-16 and single OC-48/STM-16 configurations.
The features of the VSC9115 improve and simplify networking equipment designs for OC-48 applications while offering an easy migration path to OC-192 designs with the VSC9118 by utilizing the same board and software. These devices offer a finer bandwidth granularity that allows equipment vendors to optimize bandwidth utilization for hitless rate adaptation through the use of VC and Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme (LCAS). By including Generic Framing Procedure (GFP), Link Access Procedure for SDH (LAPS) and Packet over SONET (PoS), the VSC9118/VSC9115 can provide flexible mapping of Ethernet and SAN data traffic into OC-48/OC-192 SONET/SDH networks. The devices support up to 64 logical channels (STS-1/VC-3 to STS-192c/VC4-64c), offer two level pointer generation and interpretation for SDH mapping of VC-3 to AU-4.
"Given carriers' economic constraints to leverage existing SONET infrastructure and the need for Ethernet services, GFP framers satisfy a pressing business need," said Allan Armstrong, director, communications semiconductors, at RHK. "By providing a GFP framer with virtual concatenation support, Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme, and 10 Gbps capacity, Vitesse supports the trend of increasing functionality in the Metro edge and the ability of system vendors to build denser and more sophisticated boxes."
The line and system side of the devices contains OIF SFI-4 and OIF SPI-4.2 interfaces, respectively, for seamless connection to optical transponders or physical layer components, and devices that support system packet interface such as network processors (NPs) and media access controllers (MACs). For external DDR SDRAM, the VSC9118/VSC9115 offer a glueless interface to support diverse routing applications. Easy connections to redundant TDM switch fabrics are achieved with these devices. The VCS9118 supports OC-48 and OC-192 data rates with quad working and protected 2.488 Gbps or 622 Mbps backplane interfaces and the VSC9115 supports single OC-48 data rate with a single working and protected 2.488 Gbps or quad 622 Mbps backplane interfaces.
"The VSC9118/VSC9115 achieve new thresholds in design. They support single OC-48 or quad OC-48/ OC-192 and include GFP, LAPS, LCAS, as well as a number of other important features. Customers will be poised to maximize return on current systems and deliver solid next generation networks when including these devices," said Fotis Konstantinidis, product marketing manager for Vitesse's Network Products Division. "The VSC9118/VSC9115, coupled with the upcoming MACs from Vitesse, will be the first devices in a powerful data over SONET product family."
Vitesse will provide a complete set of support materials for these products including evaluation boards, API device drivers, BSDL files, IBIS models, application notes, and applications support. Both devices are packaged in a 728 TBGA. The VSC9118/VSC9115 will sample in November 2002 and will be available in production quantities by the first quarter of 2003. The VSC9118 is priced at $960 and VSC9115 is priced at $480 each for sample quantities. These multi-service, VC mappers complement other Vitesse products including optical transponder modules, Ethernet MACs, physical layer components, pointer processors, VT1.5/STS-1 TSI switches, and packet/cell switch fabrics.
